The computers monitoring her heart stopped beeping, as her heart slowed to a stop. Elsie was dead. Her mother burst into tears and her dad wrapped his arms around her, his eyes glistening. Her older brother stood there in shock.
Elsie's spirit, however was drifting out of her body and up into the air. She looked down and frowned, confused.
She wondered what was going on, opening her mouth to ask her mother what was wrong, but she couldn't speak. A single tear spilled onto her dad's cheek.
"Are you going to sign in, dear?"
An elderly woman sitting behind a desk showed Elsie a clipboard with a sheet on it. It had the names of multiple people on it. Elsie recognised a few, like Adam James and Lucy Albert. They were people who lived in her street, until they passed away. Realisation dawned on her and she felt a cold feeling all over herself, as though someone had tipped a bucket of icy water on her.
"I'm dead, aren't I?"
The lady looked sadly at her through steel rimmed spectacles. Elsie's chest constricted, making it extremely hard for her to breathe. She couldn't be dead! She was only fourteen. But then again she figured that age didn't matter when it came to death.
"Say goodbye to them before you sign. You won't be able to after."
The lady offered her the clipboard again.
Tears streaming down her cheeks, Elsie turned and whispered,
"Goodbye. I love you."
Then she signed the sheet and floated away.Down in the land of the living her family also said goodbye and in their hearts, felt a reply.
