NIKLAUS BAUREGARD sat at his office desk, reading a student's essay when his boyfriend appeared at the door. "Hey, Klaus, do you want anything? At all?" He asked and Niklaus looked at the time. "Uh... Nothing." He shook his head and Miles nodded his head a bit.
"Do you wanna watch a movie for a bit? After you're done?" He asked and Niklaus nods right away. "Pick it out and I'll be there in a bit." He smiled and Miles smiled as well. "I love you." He says and it made Niklaus think for a moment.
He loved Miles for sure but there was always something holding him back deep down. He lies easily, "I love you too, Stonem." He says and Miles smiled more then walked off.
That night was how Niklaus expected, halfway through the movie Miles got touchy and kissy while he watched the movie. They ended up heading to their shared bedroom and once they were done, Niklaus slipped on his sweatpants, he thinks they're his but soon finds out they're Miles'.
But he doesn't mind as he got up and headed out the bedroom door. His back kind of stings because of all the marks but he continued down the hall, heading into the kitchen where he poured himself a cup of water. He drank it all in one shot and then grabbed a fruit cup from the refrigerator.
He walks into the living room and stared out at their town, eating the strawberries from the fruit cup first. Strawberries were a scent he loved a lot, something he must have forgotten but always felt like home. Just about all the time.
He set down the fruit cup when he finished the strawberries and only blueberries and raspberries were left. He jumps when his phone started ringing. He sighed, walking over to the iPhone and picked it up, staring at the phone screen.
It was a number he doesn't recognize and it said the call was from Derry, Maine. For a moment he forgot and realized, quickly answering. "Hello?" He said into the phone as he stared out the window again. "Niklaus? Is this Niklaus Bauregard?" Niklaus' face scrunched up slightly. "Yes?"
"It's Mike... Mike Hanlon? Remember me?"
Niklaus' eyes went wide. "My first crush! Mike Hanlon... Hi!" He said a bit too loudly and Mike took a moment before chuckling. "First crush? I'm flattered..." That made Niklaus blush, staring down at the floor now. "Uh... why'd you call?" He asked, curiously and Mike took a moment again.
"It's back."
"Oh... shit."
Niklaus rushed back into his bedroom and pulled on a shirt, grabbing his jacket as he started shoving clothes and shoes into a suitcase. He must have been rummaging too loudly as the sound of a throat being cleared caught his attention. He glanced up, seeing Miles standing there.
"What's going on?"
He sighed and walked over to his boyfriend. He leaned in and kissed him gently on the lips as Miles' hands went to his waist. He pulled back, "I have to go to America." He walked away.
Miles' face scrunched up. "What?" He said and Niklaus said nothing, packing his bag some more until he had everything he needed. "I got a call from an old friend, it's an emergency." He said and zipped up the suitcase. "What? Babe, no, you can't just go... it's an old friend, who cares?" Niklaus said as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"It's important..."
Niklaus turned to his boyfriend who's face scrunched up more, "Klaus..." Miles said softly and Niklaus sighed. "I'm sorry... okay? I know our two years is next week, but I promise I will be back in time for that... alright?" He asked and Miles stared at him with that look again. "Miles..." Niklaus said and Miles' nostrils are flaring.
"Who the bloody hell is Mike Hanlon and why is he asking you to go back to America?" Is all Miles said and he sounded angry. Niklaus backed away a bit, "a friend... old friend, he and I use to be great friends until I had to move back here." He explained. Miles scoffed and laughed bitterly.
"Oh, don't act dumb now, I know it now, I get it. You're one of those gays. A whore." Miles said and his words stung, Niklaus' face dropping. "Miles..." He sighed and Miles rolled his eyes. "First crush? I heard that bullshit, Klaus." He said and Niklaus sighed. "So what? I've liked many guys before you, dated many guys before you and even had sex with at least three guys before you..." He said and Miles shook his head right away.
"Mike isn't gonna be a fifth." He said and Niklaus rolls his eyes. "Yeah, he isn't... I'm going. You can't stop me. I got a flight already, it leaves in an hour." Niklaus said and Miles scoffs again. "In that much of a rush to fuck him?" His cussing made Niklaus grimace. "Miles, you can't just get like this! Just the other day, my student was speaking to me and you assumed he was fucking me to get good grades!" He said and Miles nods slowly.
"Because I know you are," he says and Niklaus sighed. He rushed past him, holding his suitcase but Miles grabbed his forearm harshly. "You go, see what fucking happens." Miles said and Niklaus rips his arm from his grip. "You're not good for me..." He whispered and walked away.
Miles started getting more angry, heavy breathing and a glare on his face. "You don't know what I'm capable of, Niklaus!" He said but Niklaus said nothing as he opened the door and exited the apartment. In fear, Niklaus rushed down the hall and exited the apartment building.
In the taxi to the airport, Niklaus stared out the window and thought of what Mike said, that he'd text him all of the details before he got there. While on the plane, Niklaus slept and then when he woke up, he had landed in Maine.
