It was a cold Winter's day in New York city.
Daisy had prepared herself that it could be freezing cold during Winter in the city that ever sleeps, yet she gasped for air when the ice cold wind greeted her, the second she got off the plane. She felt tears forming in her eyes and she instinctly pulled her thick scarf up, so that her face was at least a little bit protected from the sudden cold.
Still, all the coldness in the world could not be compared to the sadness that Daisy felt in her heart. Even though she had decided she would start all over again, and move to New York in order to find everything she was looking for, and maybe more, she was feeling sad and lonely. Daisy was heartbroken.
Yes, most people, if not all, get their heart broken at some point during their lives, that's nothing new. But Daisy was broken for real, possibly even beyond repair. Daisy had lost faith in humanity completely, even though sometimes she wished she would just wake up from that terrible nightmare called "life". Every night, she would go to sleep, praying to all the Gods present, to let her please forget everything that had happened to her lately, but every morning, as soon as she opened her eyes, the memories came back, haunting her.
Daisy called her life a "real life soap opera", and no one could deny this was - actually - the truth.
First of all, her younger brother Grant - and bff since they had been toddlers - had been diagnosed with leukemia. He went to the Dr's office, complaining about some vague symptoms and loss of weight, and boom! Two weeks later, he died. It had crushed her. Grant had Always been there for her, they shared the same sense of humour, the same passion for sports and music. They knew each other's secrets. And suddenly, he was ripped out of her life. For good. A part of Daisy had died that day too, and she just knew things would never be the same.
Daisy was engaged to a young man called Bill. They had been dating for three years now, and in a few weeks' time, they would get married. Daisy wanted to put the wedding off for a while, because she didn't feel like celebrating when she was still feeling so overwhelmed with grief and sadness over Grant's passing, but Bill persuaded her to get married anyway. They even got into a fight about it, because Daisy thought Bill was being too insensitive, while he thought she was being silly. After all, a lot of money was already spent on the wedding, and besides - it wouldn't matter anyway because Grant wouldn't be there - whether they would postpone the wedding or not. Normally, Daisy would never accept an explanation so full of ignorance and lack of understanding to her feelings, but because she was feeling emotionally unstable already, she finally agreed to hold the wedding on the day it was originally planned.
However, two days before her wedding, Daisy had caught Bill in bed with one of her bridesmaids - a classic senario. After throwing Bill and all of his belongings out, her mom and dad announced they were going to get a divorce. After all, why keeping up appearances, now that the wedding was off? Her mom and dad weren't happy anymore, and agreed upon waiting to tell Daisy untill after the wedding, but now that this was not going to happen, they decided to spill the tea immediately.
This was it for Daisy. She felt helpless, crushed, heartbroken and devastated. Losing her brother, being cheated on by her fiancé, her parents getting a divorce.... it was all too much. Everything in her life started to crumble around her, and instinctly she knew that staying was only going to make things worse.
So this is when she decided to start all over again. Daisy asked for a transfer to another office where she could work as a freelance writer, booked a one-way ticket to New York, and decided not to look back at her old life. Ever again.
And here she was - she probably arrived on the coldest day of the year, but no cold could compete with the sadness and pain in her heart. It would take months, years, maybe a lifetime to ever recover from this.
"I feel so lost without you...."she silently whispered, hot tears running down her cheeks. No, she wasn't crying over Bill. She was crying because she missed her brother. "Grant, what do I do now?"
A/N A short introduction chapter - Joe will soon make an entrance, not to worry!
