Even though Daisy had been scared to start this journey, she never hesitated. She decided that being scared might even be a good thing for her, as - until now - her life had pretty much been planned ahead for her.
After all - she had led a relatively safe life: Her parents had paid for her education, she never needed part-time jobs to pay for her tuition, her parents were Always there. They were the solid rock in her life. And there had been Bill. Bill, whom she'd met when she was only 17. They were high-school Sweethearts, and somehow, it had been the natural thing to get engaged, and get married. Daisy let out a sigh. Bill had been such a liar, a cheater. And she was the fool. And her parents? Nothing left of that solid rock she once depended on. So yes, it was a good thing she now let all of these false hopes, all of these false certainties behind.
Daisy had been grateful, there had been a job opening in New York. She never once hesitated, and took the oportunity. Her parents were outraged, but she simply didn't care. This was something she needed to do. For herself.
And now she found herself standing in front of a huge block of flats, keys in hand. One of the flats would be hers. Her employer had arranged everything for her, and to be honest - Daisy never asked for anything, she was grateful her boss had been so helpfull but now she was standing in front of this building, she could feel butterflies in her stomach. Hopefully the place was decent enough to call "home".
Daisy's flat was on the third flour at number 328. She carefully opened her front door, and took a quick look inside, only to let out a sigh of relief almost immediately. This place was absolutely stunning! Daisy found herself standing in a rather large, bright living room with ensuite kitchen. There was a very comfortable, black leather sofa available, as well as a dining table with two chairs, and two separate comfortable lounging chairs. The kitchen was small, but with a dishwasher, coffee machine and all crockery and cutlery needed.
There was one small, but cosy bedroom with a double bed and large wardrobe, and a smaller room / closet where she could store her belongings. The bathroom wasn't large, but functional and also very bright, with a shower and sink. Daisy loved it! She immediately dropped her suitcases in her bedroom and flopped on her bed. Heaven! Before anything, Daisy decided to take a nap, as she was positively exhausted from her travel. And because her bed felt so comfortable, it didn't take long before she drifted off into a peacefull sleep.
-------
After a few hours, Daisy woke up, completely disorientated. It took her a few moments before she actually realised she was in her new flat, in her own bed. She smiled probably the biggest smile she had smiled in a long time. She just knew this was the right thing to do, and that if she was going to put some effort into it, things would work out just fine.
Daisy decided to unpack her suitcases and put all of her things away. After this, she decided to explore her surroundings a bit more. Before she arrived at her block of flats, she noticed that there were a few shops, a supermarket and a café just around the corner. As Daisy was starving, she decided it was time to get some groceries and find a place to get some coffee and maybe something to eat as well.
The little café around the corner appeared to be a very cosy coffee bar, and Daisy sat down after ordering herself a tall latte and a cream cheese bagel. She decided to tekst her parents that she had arrived, and that everything was well. After that, she called her New York boss, to tell him, too, that she arrived, and would like to know when she was expected in the office.
"Ah, Daisy, great to hear from you and to hear that you've arrived safely in the big Apple!" her boss chirped. She had the most cheerful voice. Daisy was hoping she was as much as a Delight to actually work with as she sounded. "As for you coming in... Uhm, how about I let you get a bit more used to the time difference, and I'll see you the day after tomorrow? I'll send you all the details about when and where by email, is that ok?" Daisy was more than happy with that. "That's great, thank you!" she answered. "I'll look forward to us meeting, and I'll look forward to your email then". Daisy sighed. So far, so good.
After another large latte (there's nothing like too much coffee) Daisy decided to get some groceries and take those back to her flat. She didn't feel much like cooking, besides, she was way too exhausted for that. So she decided it would be best to get some pizza, or a pasta. Daisy had seen a lovely little Italian place right across the street from her flat, so it would be best to first get her necessities, take them to her flat, and come back later for diner.
At the grocery store, Daisy bought fresh fruit and vegetables, juice, milk and bread. Just a few things to get her through the first day or so. With two brown paper bags in her hands, she walked outside, struggling to both walk and watch where she was going. A disaster waiting to happen, especially if you knew how clumsy Daisy can be at times. And this is exactly what happened....
"Whoah! Watch where you are going!!" Daisy could hear the voice of a man shouting.
Unknown to where the sound came from, Daisy tried to look around, causing her to lose her balance, tripping over her own feet, and... falling straight into the lap of a young man, while both her bags filled with groceries were all over the place. Daisy let our a shriek, trying to grab her stuff (but no such luck, of course) and was met with a half shocked, half bemused look.
"Steady on" the young man half laughed. "If you wanted my attention so bad, you could have just said hello" And he grinned, while holding out his hand to get Daisy up. "Are you ok there?" he asked, still grinning. "Uhmmm.. yes, no! I-I mean.. yes, yeah I am. But my sodding groceries are all over the fucking place" she scoffed, which earned a chuckle from the man. "Oh dear!" he laughed "I'm sorry, not trying to make fun of you, but it's the way you're saying it. British?" he wanted to know. "Yes" Daisy grumbled. Is me being British funny, or something? She thought. What a arsehole! How dare he! Daisy was most definitely not in the mood for funny business.
"I'm sorry, let me help you" he offered, and started packing up Daisy's groceries "Thank you" she mumbled, still rather offended by his remark about her accent.
"I think this is it" he smiled at Daisy. "Thank you for your help" she said, not exactly looking at him. Daisy wanted to go home, put her stuff away and get something to eat. That was all. She was not looking forward to having conversations with strangers, especially not with funny men with goofy smiles.
"I'm Joe" he suddenly said. "Daisy" was her short answer. "Nice to meet you, Daisy" he smiled, and started to walk away. Daisy was stunned. Why didn't he try to chat her up? Wait, what? Am I feeling offended now?
