According to famous Comedian and ogre 'Shrek', onions have layers. That is indeed true. Onions do have layers, ogres do too.
But the question still remains.
What is the definition of an onion?

Let's break it up. Here are some common theories on what are onions.
1. Shrek
First of all, there is only one Shrek, and he isn't that huge. Second of all, Shrek is an ogre and ogres have layers. According to his famous words, he mentioned onion and ogre separately, so they are two different things.

2. Planet Earth
Now, this is one of the theories that kinda make sense. So, we all know that onions have layers. And our earth has 'layers'. There's the sky, the ground, and underground. That's only 3 layers. Onions have way more layers. (Estimated 69 000).

3. Fat people
Now this is just fat shaming. :|

4. Our universe
Close...But not there yet. Those who think that onions are our universe, are semi correct. But there is one more theory that looks at it in a more wholistic manner and is most likely correct.

5. Our 'multiverse'
Our multiverse is our universes combined. That is the theory that most Scientists think is the correct one. I think so too. Nothing beats science. Our universe has layers, but does it have approximately 69000? I didn't think so. That's why multiverse is the more accurate word to describe onions.

Now you may think that's all, but you're wrong.
There's still one more question.
What makes up an onion?...

If you do not know the answer, you do not understand the meaning of life. WE make up the onion. Our multiverse is an onion. Multiverse is made up of universes. Universes are made up of planets. Planets are made up of countries. Countries are made up of the living beings, and structures.
But most importantly, all of us.
The countries, the planets, the people, the plants etc. They are all bunched together to form layers.
Onions have layers.
