Eventually, they parted ways, promising to be good friends, and talk often.
Rukia visited the human world often, always making sure to visit with 'Chizaki.'
They became very close really soon; and Ichigo was happy. He didn't regret leaving- but he didn't regret coming back, even if she didn't know it was really him.
For once, Ichigo was completely at home.
He had a normal (well as normal as he could get) life.
He didn't have to worry about ruling his kingdom, (His advisors were used to him being gone- and even encouraged it. "Less likely for you to be assassinated," they said.) He didn't have to worry about tracking down hollows every day. He didn't have to worry about whether or not his friends would find out about his hollow side.
He had a home he could return to.
He had a family he could go to.
He had a friend that he could listen to.
And he was just a normal human.
So it figures that everything would go so badly wrong.
"Your Majesty!" One of his advisors popped into existence in his closet.
At midnight.
"Whaaaat?" Ichigo whined. "Can't it wait?"
The arrancar bowed, then rushed into his report. "I'm sorry, but this is of the utmost importance! A group of hollows have been convincing others to rebel! There was a surprise attack- some of Aizen's followers, most which were assumed dead, were there, and killed many in Las Noches!"
By now, Ichigo was up and awake. "Open a Gargantuan." He commanded. "I'm going back. Go wake up Neliel. Explain the situation. Tell her to report to level 1 battle formation."
"Yessir!"
He stepped through the portal, leaving his gigai behind.
Back in the sandy expanse, he was faced with several old faces. Most he knew just by sight. But one was there that he would never forget.
"Grimmjow." Ichigo snarled.
The blue haired arrancar grinned.
"Sup, Ichigo! I see you haven't changed. I hope you don't mind- I set a few of your prisoners free. They should be in the human world by now. But don't focus on that- they haven't been ordered to attack yet.
"I heard that there was a new King. A terrifying arrancar with red hair and a black sword. I came to challenge him, but he ain't here! That stupid advisor was supposed to bring him to me, but he brought you instead. Pathetic- you're exactly the same- even your spiritual pressure is the same!" he scoffed, unaware.
A dark aura surrounded Ichigo.
"Who... did you kill..." he growled.
"Hm? You actually care about these hollows? Woooow, that's new!"
Ichigo grit his teeth. The aura around him grew, until the rebels could feel it.
"You will tell me. Who. Did. You. Kill?" the energy suppressors came off, and his pressure spiked.
The rebels hissed in surprise as he suddenly gained ten to twenty times the pressure he had before.
He summoned his mask as the aura from his Getsuga made his hair look red.
"You wanted to challenge me, Grimmjow?" he growled through the mask.
The cocky arrancar was as pale as snow- then red with blood as the sword came down.
