My breath gets caught in my lungs and suddenly I can't breathe. I stumble backward. I recognized the handwriting, it was Tegans. However, that is not the reason for my erratic behavior. On the other side of the note was the word die, written in blood. I have always had a fear of blood, whenever someone was injured I ran away and tried not to throw up. Blood brings back the memories of my mother, to one of the additional reasons to why she died.
I regained my composure and scrunched up the note before stuffing it into my pocket. I shut my eyes and take a deep breath. I grab my snack form my locker and lock it back up. With my apple in hand, I head to the library. I keep my head down, already hearing the whispers of all the jealous girls who want to end me. I see it in their eyes. I make it to the library and spot April and sitting across from her was Ren. They are talking. I gather up my courage and walk over to the table, pulling up a seat next to April.
"Hey, Naomi. Are you ok?" April asks worry etched on her face. I probably look like a ghost.
"I am alright." April immediately understands and changes the conversation.
"So Ren, what classes do you have next?" She asks him.
"Oh, I have Ancient History next. How about you?" He looks at me.
"Same..." I lower my gaze. I need to get over this 'not being able to socialize' thing.
He smiled, I didn't need to look up to tell I just know. "That's great! At least I have a friend in that class." Friend... I look up and smile.
"Same here." I look over at April and her jaw is open so wide it could break.
I made a new friend. This is one for the history books since it usually takes me months for someone to be considered my friend. April was one of those special cases, same as Ren.
We talk for the rest of recess. It wasn't an in-depth chat, just general things. What primary school we went to, what type of music we like; those kinds of things. When the bell goes we head off to our lockers. As I take my materials from my locker, I remember the apple I have in my head. I never ate it. I placed it back in my bag and shut my locker.
For the first time in a long time, I feel confident about walking down the corridor without worrying about what people say. I feel empowered. I chose Ancient History because I enjoy learning about the past and I have always believed that everyone can learn from their past mistakes. However some of Tegan's groupies are in my class, they aren't as bad a she is, but bad enough for me to not want to be anywhere near them.
As I was the first to arrive, I took my normal seat which is located on the far left side in the middle row. I had a clear view of the whiteboard and the projector. The best seat in the house. Students start to flood in, most looking at me like I was a psycho since who in their right mind would arrive so early to class. The teacher, Mrs. Rose walks in after them. She gives me a small smile. I smile back. It's only polite.
The bell goes to end the class and Ren never came to class. I waited until everyone left before I exited the classroom, that's when all the girls surrounded me. Their eyes were full of hatred and the desire to kill. They looked like a pack of hungry wolves who are about to devour their prey.
It was a good ten seconds before one of the girls spoke. Her name was Persephone. Another irregular name. One of the weirdest I have heard. "So, I heard your new friend got in a fight with Tegan." She said with a bitchy snark. "He overheard her talking shit about you and confronted her. He called her a stuck up prick." I couldn't believe my ears. Ren was standing up for me. I never thought in a million dreams that anyone would ever take my side, except April of course but she prefers to let them say what they want since their words have no effect until you let them get to you. "So what do you say to that you low life." She practically spat. " Did you bribe him to be your friend? Did you promise to do it with him? Cuz how in the world did you get him to call Tegan such a thing? HOW!" All the girls nod in agreement.
"I didn't ask him to do anything," I whisper, practically talking under my breath. This doesn't sit well with the girls.
"WHAT? SPEAK UP YOU SHIT!" Yelled one of them.
"I DIDN'T ASK HIM TO DO ANYTHING!" I yell back. They were shocked for a second, only to then retaliate with lots of questions and insults. "I didn't bribe him. I didn't want him to do anything. It was all his choice, and... and I am happy someone finally said something to Tegan because she needs to get off her fucking high horse and learn that the world doesn't revolve around her."
"What did you say, bitch? Do you feel like your superior now that you have that man wrapped around your finger? Does it feel good?" Persephone snaps. The next thing I knew she punched me in the face. I fell to the ground with a thud. My books scattering everywhere. As she draws closer to me, I slide backward until my back hits the door of the classroom. The feeling of fear runs through me. I look around thring to find a way out but to no avail. She looms over me, I bring my arms up to my face. She throws punch after punch and after a little while I go numb to the pain and once again I feel so alone.
