The Sister

I wake up the next morning and head downstairs to the kitchen.  Once again, Declan is cooking for me.  I certainly did not expect this.  I make my way over to the table and as soon as I'm seated he gently sets my plate in front of me.

This man really makes no sense.

I may hate his guts, but I'm tired of eating in horrifically awkward silence.

"Why did you care yesterday?"

"What?"

"Last night.  You told your beta not to wake me up.  Why did you care?"

"What kind of question is that?"

"A reasonable one."

He gives me a look and picks up a newspaper.  That went well.  I sigh and stand up from the table, grabbing my dishes to put in the sink.  I retreat back to "my" room.  It may have been physically forced upon me, but it's the only area in this house where I feel safe.  I snuggle into bed and turn the tv on.

Is this really going to be my life here?  Speak one sentence to my cold mate and watch tv?

That's unacceptable.  But I'll leave it alone for today because there's a movie marathon on...

Some hours later I get a knock on my door.  I immediately stiffen and straighten my back.  Who could that be?  I tell them to come in, but it comes out more like a question.  A tall blond girl walks in.

"Alpha Declan sent me.  He figured you were lonely and wanted me to cheer you up."

Cheer me up? Cheer me up!  Like he cares!

"So he sent you to do his busy work for him?"

"Luna I promise it's not like that..."

"Don't call me that."

"I'm sorry?"

"Luna.  Don't call me Luna.  Call me Hunter.  And you can go tell that alpha of yours to..."

"Look, Hunter, I know this whole situation isn't ideal. But you can trust me, okay? I'm Claire. I'm Declan's sister. I'm here to help you through this because we both know Declan sucks at human interaction."

A loud gasp escapes my lips and I slowly try to back away from her on the bed. "You're... you're who?"

"No, Hunter, please stop I'm not going to hurt you I promise."

"That's what they all say."

Silence.

She takes a deep sigh. "How about I come back in a little bit. I'll even bring some cookies. How does that sound?"

I just stare at her. She thankfully gets up and leaves. What the hell just happened?

Eventually, Claire does come back with cookies as promised.  I must admit, they are good.

She tries to pry some minor information from me but I give her practically nothing.  If Declan wants to know so bad, he can ask me himself.

She tells me stories about when they were kids, obviously trying to help me warm up to him.  Was this all part of his master plan?  I don't buy it, of course.  I've given up on trying to find the good in people.  Everyone who I put my trust in delivered it back to me with a slap on the face.  I have the scars to prove it.

Claire hangs around for an uncomfortably long amount of time.  I'm quite tired by the time she leaves.  Yawning, I let myself fall backwards on to my pillow, embracing the empty sleep to come.
