A baby boy was born to an Aeta mother at twilight of June 15, 1991 when Mt. Pinatubo was erupting. A few minutes after he was born, his mother died.

The baby could have died, too, had it not been for the timely arrival of volunteer nurses and doctors.

The father did not know what to do. He was confused. He had six other children. Nothing was left of their belongings. Lahar from Mt. Pinatubo buried houses including theirs.

Angry waves of ashfall killed people and animals. Worst, the family had nothing to eat. Despite all these, the father managed to say "Ma'am, you are an angel sent from heaven." That was after seeing his baby safe and alive in the arms of Miss Torres, one of the volunteer nurses.

But the father's problem did not end there. How was he going to take care of six children and a new born baby?

It was then that Miss Torres told the father that she was willing to adopt the baby. And so the adoption papers were prepared.

"I would not want to part with my baby," the father said between sobs. But he had to, so as to give his baby a chance to live.

When the van that was to bring the volunteers to Manila came, the father cried a river. He knew that his baby would be leaving them.

In Manila, the baby was taken care of like a real member of the family. He was named Benjamin Joseph after the biblical character. He was given a chance to belong to a home and family. At the age of six in 1997, he was sent to school, just like the other children.

Miss Torres and the whole Torres family are happy to see that Benjamin Joseph is doing well in school. He is a bright and active boy. A survivor!

Miss Torres said, "As of now, he still does not know his story. But someday, he will. And if someday he would want to see his family, we will allow him to do so. We can help him trace his roots."
