Abu's home was the desert, all of the desert. Abu did not live in a house in one place like most children. He lived with his mother and father in a tent. Their tent moved with them. And their animals moved with them. They moved from place to place to look for grass and water. Each new place was like the one they just left. And no place even had a name.
In summer the hot sun dried up the springs. The grass did not grow. As Abu's father put up the tent, he would say, "Tomorrow we will move on. We may find grass ahead for the animals."
Once Abu's father told him a story about the ocean. " Is the desert like the ocean?" Abu asked.
"Yes, my child," said his father. "In many ways the desert is like the ocean. But the desert has sand in place of water."
Abu liked to think of the desert as an ocean. He would ride on his camel. But he would pretend that he was on a boat. And he would be looking for an island. He wanted an island that he could name.
Each morning Abu liked to watch the sun come up. It came right out of the sand like a ball. Some nights the sides of the tent were up to let in the air. Then Abu would look at the stars in the sky. He would pretend that each star was a drop of water. "If we had all the water," he would say, "we would never have to move again. Our tent would be a real home." Then Abu would stop pretending.
One day Abu asked if he could dig into the earth.
"I want to try to find my shimmering stars," Abu said. "I want to find my small drops of water. I think if I dig long enough and deep enough, I may find them."
"Dig for stars?" his father laughed. "Child, there is nothing under the sand but more sand. The stars are above the sand. We must move on."
But Abu asked once more. "Please, Father. May I just try?"
His father smiled. "Well, you may look," he said. "But when our spring runs dry, we must be on our way."
That same night Abu began to dig. He found a place where it seemed that the grass was greener than any other place. There he dug.
Night after night he dug. After a while, his hole was so deep that he stood in it up to his knees. But there was no water.
At times Abu gave up the hard work. He would look at the stars that were shimmering. They looked like little drops of water. Then, Abu would dig some more.
Then one day while Abu work, his father told him that the spring had run dry. They would leave the next morning.
Abu cried that night as he dug deeper into the hole. "I will never find stars on the earth," he thought.
That night as Abu's father put Abu to bed, he smiled. "The child has dreams, and sometimes dreams hurt. But dreams, like water and food, make boys grow into men."
The next day the camels were packed. Abu went to take a last look at the hole he had made. Deeper and deeper he went until he reached the bottom of the hole, and his feet could feel wet sand. He got down to his knees to feel it with his hands. It was wet. It was really wet!
"Please, Father, come quickly," he cried. "The water is here. It's here!"
Abu's father climbed down the hole and picked up some sand. It was wet. "My child, you are right," he said. "Your shimmering stars are there under the sand. We will stay here."
So Abu and his father made the hole into a well.
Now their tent is a real home. Each time night fell on the desert, Abu looked into his well and saw his shimmering stars. He had named the place, "Oasis of Stars."
