Aphina woke up, panting. She'd had too many strange dreams this week. She got out of bed and took in a deep sniff. The scent of her mother, Aphmau's, delicious pancakes were thick on the air. Awful snoring sounded in the room, and she glanced over to her older brother's bed. Levin was snoring very loudly.

Hopping on the bed, Aphina shook her brother. "Wake up!"

"Twenty more minutes, Mom..." Levin grumbled.

"Leeeeeevin, Mommy made pancakes!~" Aphina sing-songed.

Levin immediately shot up out of the bed, throwing the blankets over his sister. Aphina giggled in delight and threw them over her head.

"Levin, make your bed," said Aphmau, who had come up the stairs to tell the children to come down.

Aphina hopped off of the bed and aided her brother in making his bed, then they ran down the stairs into the kitchen.

A white quartz-tiled floor spread out under the purple-painted walls, and the slightly tinted glass looked out on the dock and the village below. A brown wooden table sat in the corner with a teapot, and Zoey, the elf, caretaker of Levi most of his life, and Aphmau's friend, sat at the table, sipping the tea. Zoey gazed fondly at the children coming speeding down from the bedroom.

"Good morning, Levi! Aphina," the elf added, ruffling the little girl's hair.

Aphmau walked after, shaking her head as the kids went back to getting their breakfast, practically tumbling over each other to the pancakes.

Her face falling solemn, Aphmau savored the moment. There wouldn't be many like this left. After all, Shad was back. Irene knows what he'll do after what he tried with Alina, Aphmau fretted.

Everyone sat at the table as the children ended their meal with some fruit.

"So," Aphmau began, leaning forward on the table, "Who would like to go for a boat ride with me?" she glanced between the children.

Aphina's eyes glistened, wide as moons. "Me, me, I will, Mommy, I will!" she bounced up from her chair. Zoey leaned over and lifted Aphina up and next to Aphmau, where she could be tickled.

After she finished wriggling her fingers at Aphina's belly, Aphmau turned to her eldest son, Levi.

"So, what about you? How do you plan on keeping busy?" she queried.

Levi paused for a moment, then listed, "Well, Malachi and I are going to help with the construction of the barracks, finish the last rooms for the inn, and finally, the new waiting room for the hospital."

"Phoenix Drop sure has grown," Zoey murmured, then added to Aphmau, "Are you sure you don't want help? I'm not trying to humble you, but a village this size would have a council. You may want to start considering, Aphmau," the elf took another sip of her steaming tea and sighed. "Of course, I wouldn't convince you of that, Aphmau." her eyes lit with amusement.

"Mmm, well, I suppose I could start pondering about that," Aphmau said with her finger to her chin. Standing up, she lifted Aphina up and carried her to the door.

"No, Mommy! I want to walk! I'm a big, big girl!" Aphina added as she held her head high.

Aphmau bent over and cupped her daughter's face. "Oh, I know you are. That's what scares me, Aphina. You're going to grow so fast!"

"But Mommy, moms' aren't scared of anything. You're big and tough!" Aphina held her fists out and threw an imaginary punch.

Aphmau sighed. If only she knew...

Zoey waved the two goodbye. Aphmau peeped her head out from behind the doorframe and called, "Levin, don't forget to check up on Malachi for me! Love you!"

Levin acknowledged her with a nod as she poured his own cup of Zoey's tea.

Down the path to the dock, a cobblestone path lay, meandering and trailing in a system to the village of Phoenix Drop. Leaves of deciduous trees lined the ground, and little puddles formed here and there, dappling the path. Mud spattered on Aphina's boots as she stamped through each one, sending up murky droplets in a small fray.

Thoughts of Shad loomed over Aphmau, but she pushed them away. I have to focus on here and now. And the kids. Before they're gone. She stopped. No, I'll never let Shad take them away. Not over my dead body. I promise on Aaron's soul. Her throat tightened at the memories whizzing by in her mind. Swallowing the lump in her throat, Aphmau continued to trek down the path to the docks.
