Nina was driving her white Mercedes on an empty road at this time of day. Seeing the red light at the traffic light, she stopped quickly. While waiting for the possibility of moving on, not far away, she looked at Anna, who was sitting in the back seat in car seat, buckled tightly with safety belts. She slept so peacefully. Nina was so sorry that she was about to have to wake her up. The most important thing is that they were already at home. Their home. It's only now that it's come to Nina. It won't just be her home anymore. It will be Anna's house. It will be their home. In fact, it's already their home.
Nina barely managed to get to the uphill stretch, she was already leaning towards Anna. Eventually, however, she got out of the car, changing the back seat, next to a sleeping child. For a moment she wanted to take her in her arms and take her to her new room. However, she quickly rejected the idea. She knew that it would take a while for the little girl to get used to her. She was too worried that Anna might get scared, distance herself. She read too much about it to doubt it now. She didn't want to take any chances. Not yet. It's not time yet. Just a moment.
Instead, she brought her face closer to Anna's ear. She took her hair off. ''Wakey wakey, Annie. We are home.''
''Mommy' s home?'' She asked in a sleepy voice. Anna could hardly open her eyes. She was very sleepy.
''Our home.'' Nina corrected her. ''Tired of the road?''
''Mm-hmm.'' Anna moaned quietly. Nina skewed her head slightly when she looked at the curled-up girl and slowly unbuckled her from the car seat. She seemed even smaller. Thumbelina, Nina thought.
''Can you get out of the car, or do you want me to take you in?'' Nina smiled.
Anna opened her eyes as ordered and looked down sadly. She avoided Nina's eyesight. ''I'm sorry. I didn't want to, I'm getting up now. Just don't be mad at me.''
To Anna's surprise, Nina quickly began to smooth her daughter's back. ''I'm mad at you? Whatever gave you that idea? It's all right, darling. You didn't do anything wrong. Mummy asked seriously. If you want, I can take you in my arms. I would love to.''
''I don't want to make a problem for you.''
''What problem? Sweetheart, you are as light as a feather. Literally. Come to your mamma.'' Nina stretched out her arms encouragingly, which the girl stuck to her. The woman was relieved that the little girl had succumbed to her.
Now Anna has seen the house more clearly from the outside. The house was huge and white. Anna only saw such ones on television, in the rare moments when Mrs. Alexandra allowed smaller children to watch TV.
Seeing her daughter's still face, Nina was worried again. However, after a while she understood. ''Sweetheart, what's wrong? Ugly?'' Nina asked playfully, amused by her reaction.
''No. On the contrary. Beautiful.'' Anna said still stunned. ''But I don't fit in here.''
''You know, I think we can fit into the doorway together.'' Nina smirked. ''Seriously, it's not you that's supposed to fit the house, it's the house that fits you. The same goes for everything else. Usually.''
''Are you sure?''
''I'm more than sure of it, my precious one.'' In saying that, Nina hugged her even tighter. ''In addition, there is a room in this house that has been specially prepared for you.'' She added after a while to encourage Anna again.
''Really?'' In her imagination, Anna saw a small room with non-creaking bed and (maybe) a small wardrobe.
''Really.'' Nina assured her. ''Can we come in? I think something is about to get ugly outside.''
