It was night. Nina slept on the bed, in a strange, almost unnatural position. She dreamt of Annie, of herself, of their lives together, and of someone else... Until she heard the loud crack of glass. That disturbing sound immediately pulled her out of her sleep. She ran out of the bedroom and quickly entered Anna's room. Her heart was beating like crazy. She was afraid that Annie might get hurt. To her surprise and even greater concern, her daughter was not in bed. The bedspread was discovered, and despite the noise, Maveirck slept on the edge of his bed, on a folded blanket. Nina swallowed severely saliva. The worst case scenarios began to emerge in her head.

''Anna? Sweetie, where are you? Talk to mommy, please. Annie, sweetie?'' Nina felt that she was almost paranoid. No answer. She searched all the rooms on the floor. Then she went down to the ground floor and almost with tears in her eyes, she started to look around. A moment later she heard silent crying and sniffing. Nina quickly looked under the table. Anna, curled up, was lying there. Her knees were pulled up under her chin, and there were tears on her cheeks. Nina, with even greater concern, took her away from the table and, sitting on the floor, held the trembling child in her arms.

''Annie, dearie, are you okay? I heard the sound of broken glass. Why are you awake?'' The girl tried to answer her, but she was too crying. ''It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy is with you. What happened, darling? Was somebody here? Did he break the window? Did you see anything?'' Nina looked around, but it was too dark, she couldn't feel any draught, and at night the wind was blowing. It couldn't be any window. ''Anna, try to calm down, please. You got scared, didn't you? It's okay, you're safe. Mommy will protect you. Always.''

''I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you. It slipped out of my hands. I didn't want to break it.'' Anna explained herself

Nina wrinkles her eyebrows. ''I don't think we understand each other. I thought some burglar broke the window. But no one's here. Why are you crying, honey?''

''I was thirsty. I wanted to take the glass from the top cupboard, so I went to the chair to reach it. But when I was taking a glass cup, I dropped it and crashed into the floor. And I fell, too, but on the rug. And the glass broke. I'm sorry, mommy.'' Only then did Nina notice the glass on the floor, the remains of the glass.

''Wait a minute, were you crying about a broken cup?'' After a while, she understood.... or rather, she thought she did. ''Is it because you fell off a chair and something hurt? Annie, is something hurting you, sweetheart?''

Anna started spinning her head fast. ''No. I fell on the rug, it was soft. I'm crying because I broke your glass.''

Nina was speechless. For a long time she was staring at a little girl shaking next to her. Anna curled up again at Nina's side, but far enough away for the woman to realize that the child was afraid of her. She was afraid of her reaction.

Nina approached Anna again, stroking her hair insecurely. Then on the cheek, she was more confident, but more gentle. ''Oh, honey, it's just a glass. One glass. We have over thirty of them, if not more. You mustn't worry about such stupid things. First of all, it's not healthy. And secondly, I don't want my little girl to cry. My heart's beating when I see you like this. Don't cry, baby. You didn't do anything wrong. Mommy is not mad at you at all. ''

Only now did Anna really look at her. For a moment she kept silent as if she was thinking about something. ''Then why aren't you smiling?'' she asked.

''Because you're not smiling, Annie.'' Nina answered. ''Because you're crying. It's okay, honey. Everything is fine. You were very scared, weren't you? You don't need to. You are so lovely. Nothing bad happened. Mommy was very scared for you and loves you very much. My good girl. Smile for your mamma. Please. Mommy misses your smile.'' Anna shyly smiled. ''That's my good girl. The smile is back. I am very happy.''
