•My great grandfather (Ronald Redvers Martin) was 21 years old in September of 1944. He was part of Div HQ DEFPL (Divisional Headquarters Defence Platoon) and the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry.
•The Battle of Arnhem ("Der Slag am Arnhem" in Dutch) happened as a result of Operation Market Garden.
•Those of you who have watched the 1977 film: "A Bridge Too Far" will be familiar with this WW2 operation. Most likely, you won't.
•OMG (Operation Market Garden) was the biggest airborn operation in history
•12,000 men dropped from Dakota's and other assorted aircraft in just over 20 minutes
•This project was followed by two further operations: Operation Berlin, and Operation Pegasus (1 and 2)
•My great grandfather was one of the lucky few who made it out alive without being taken as a POW (prisoner of war) first
•This was as big a scale project as D-Day. The reason D-Day is better known is because it succeeded. OMG did not reach the goal of the operation
