Chapter 2 (The begining)

I woke up from the nightmare I was having it was about my biggest fear. My biggest fear is losing the people closest to me.

I get nightmares very easy when I'm stressed. I looked at my phone and saw that it was four in the morning.

I sighed knowing that I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep so I decided to get up and get ready for the day.

I didn't have any classes today so I decided I would stay home and help my mom around the farm and help her get the cabin ready for the next guests.

My family has a small cabin on our land and to make more money we decided to rent out to vacationers who want a taste of the country life.

Once I got a shower and got dressed it was about 4:30 so I knew my mom wouldn't be up until five so I decided to go and ride my horse Dusk.

I went out to the barn and racked up Dusk, then brought him to the training arena, which is something my dad made for me and Devyn when we both started to ride horses.

I set up three barrels and went and got onto Dusk I took a deep breath and started to do my run. I did it over and over again until I heard someone behind me clapping.

I turned around to see my best friend Alyssa sitting on the the fence clapping for me.

"That was amazing Kota!" She said with her face lighting up like a Christmas tree and using the nickname I only let her and Devyn use.

"Thanks" I replied shyly.

"You should enter in the Summer Festival Rodeo" She screamed with excitement.

I automatically tensed up.I. Can. Not. Enter. In. A. Rodeo.

I loved rodeos don't get me wrong my favorite thing to do was to ride in a rodeo, but that all changed four years ago.

*Flashback*

I was sitting there on Dreamer my beautiful mare while I was waiting for my name to be called. My heart was going a million miles per hour. Once I heard my name I let Dreamer take off.

I rounded the first barrel everything was fine, then I rounded the second barrel I felt Dreamer slip a little but she corrected herself then we got to the third barrel the t next thing I knew I was on the ground screaming in pain because my leg was throbbing and I turned to see Dreamer laying on the floor and barley moving. I started freaking out.

All of a sudden my dad ran up to me asking if I was ok. I told him I was fine and just kept asking what was wrong with Dreamer. I've had Dreamer since I was 8 and now I was 15. I didn't want to lose her.

So I ended up having to go to the hospital because I ended up breaking my leg. Nobody was telling me what's was happening with Dreamer whenever I ask they just change the subject.

My mom said my dad was with Dreamer and the vet but that's all they would tell me.

At that moment I was more worried about my horse than my own health. My dad finally walked into my hospital room but looked very upset. As soon as I saw him like that I knew something bad was about to come out of his mouth.

I sat there waiting for my dad to say something but nothing so I finally broke the silence.

"Dad what happened to her?" Tears quickly forming in my eyes.

"I'm sorry, she broke both of her back legs we had to put her down...." he explained as he started to cry.

By the time he finished I was sobbing to the point it was hard to breath. All I remember after that was Devyn wrapping me into a hug and then I cried myself to sleep.

*End of Flashback*

That day played back in my mind and screamed "NO" at her.

She looked taken back and said " Come on Kota it's been 4 years nothing will happen, I just watched you take Dusk around like five times and nothing happened."

"I-I'm just not ready" I sighed. After the accident I couldn't ride for months. When I was finally able to ride again it was around my birthday and my dad got me Dusk. I didn't start running barrels again until the beginning of this year, it was now May. My birthday was next week and I have no clue what I'm going to do.

I then realized it was early in the morning, why is Alyssa here so early? " What are you doing here anyway?" I asked her but I think I already knew what she was going to say.

"Devyn wanted me to come and help him clean his room and go out to breakfast"she explained, yep I knew it. Oh ya did I forget to mention my best friends dating my brother. They started dating two years ago.

"Oh ok. Well you go find your boy toy while I go I tack this one." I said pointing to Dusk.

She stuck her tongue out at me and then asked before walking away "Hey, are you going to practice today?"

"Ya I might be a little late though so tell coach for me" she just nodded in agreement with saying bye and going to the house.

I untacked Dusk and went back inside to find my mom getting ready to go to make sure everything is ready to go make sure everything is ready in the cabin.

"HEY MOMMA" I practically shouted. She jumped at my sudden loud voice.

"Don't ever do that again Dakota" she said trying to catch her breath as I muttered a quiet sorry.

"So when should these new guests be here" I questioned my mother

"In about an hour so go get dressed because they're gonna hang out with you while they are here" she replied smiling evilly

"UGH YOU KNOW I DONT LIKE NEW PEOPLE UGH" I complained because I'm a really antisocial person and my mom knows that and that's my she does stuff like that.

"Too bad go get dressed out of these messy clothes"

I complained very loudly and ran up to my room. Once I got to my room I looked at my clock and noticed it was 9:30. Dang I didn't realize I was out there that long. I decided to just wear some jeans, my boots, and a T-shirt. I walked down stairs and watched T.V. for a bit until these people got here.
