His heart sounded magnificent beating in his body cavity. It kept an even rhythm, strong and beautiful to Dr. Henderson's ears. This man came to be on his operating table by way of an unfortunate mugging. He had been walking home late after work and someone ran up to him, pointed a knife, and screamed about handing over his wallet. He refused, of course, so the person stabbed him once in his stomach and again in the side of his chest. Should've just handed over the wallet.
Dr. Henderson began to slice through flesh, wiping away the pinpricks of blood as they trickled into his view. He removed the dead and unusable tissue carefully and methodically, leaving only healthy tissue behind. The lumps of meat made a sickening thump as they dropped from his gloved hands into a waste basket, squishing loudly against itself and the weaving.
Dr. Henderson pulled a little too hard at the liver getting it out of his way and suddenly his field of view was covered in thick red blood, obstructing everything but the top of the liver. He cursed loudly as he packed the cavity with gauze and towels, anything his fingers touched, but the flow was only increasing and wouldn't stop. Dr. Henderson cursed his mistake, that was six-hundred thousand dollars down the drain and caused unnecessary pain to his patient.
The patient screamed as he cut the liver away from the other organs, depositing it with the stab wound flesh. The patient screamed more as Dr. Henderson widened his surgical field, cracking his chest to get a glimpse of the quickly beating heart. He couldn't imagine his luck when, a year after he lost his medical license from malpractice, he stumbled upon a man who had been stabbed but not dead. He knew he could sell the organs and be well off for a little while. However, being a doctor without a medical license, he had to practice in his sound proof basement. It also meant the patient would not be under anesthesia for any of the procedures, but he did well until he nicked the liver.
Oh well, he thought. The heart will be well worth all the effort. And then he snipped the arteries.
