After her mother abandons her in the midst of a war, Olya hopes they'll never see each other again. A possibility that becomes all too real when Olya is inexplicably captured by an enemy soldier. In a world plagued by infertility and facing potential extinction, the remaining few women who can have children are hoarded by the government and given the title of

"Daughter of the King."

It would make sense for the soldier to take Olya, if she were a Daughter. But unlike her mother, she isn't. And Olya has no way of asking why she's been forced onto a train and taken far away from home, because according to the enemy's religious beliefs, he cannot look at, speak to, or even touch her.

The soldier said nothing.

"Where are you taking me?" I demanded.

His grip tightened on the gun, a threat.
