Will POV
We were 12 when I started to realize.
"Use fireball! Fireball him,"
"Don't, he could be bluffing. Cast a protection spell!"
"Just- just choose something! Anything!"
"Enough! Sick of your stalling, the demogorgon appears,"
"Holy shit,"
"If you get over 13 you could still kill him,"
"Shit, shit, shit,"We were sitting around the table, 10 hours into our campaign. Mike had just pulled a demogorgon out, and I had needed to roll to see if I could fight back.
So I did. But, in the process of that-"No, no, no, where did it go?"
"Find it!"
"Mike!" his mom called, as he groaned.
"I'll be right back,"
Meanwhile, the three of us searched desperately for the dice I'd managed to lose. That was, until I had."7? Shit. Just.. just don't tell Mike. He doesn't need to know."
We all looked at each other, before scrambling for our things and racing out the front door on Mike's mom's command."7."
"What?"
"I got a 7. The demogorgon got me," I informed Mike as we stood at his driveway.
"Well, anyway, I'll see you tomorrow,"
"Yeah, see you," he smiled, when I felt my heart flutter. He was a good friend, always there when I needed someone to stand by through thick and thin.
This was the kind that I figured would never break.I started pedaling my bike, and soon Mike was out of my sight. I caught up to Lucas and Dustin, to which we all said our goodbye's and I was on my way home.
Mike, Lucas and Dustin. Though Dustin only joined our group in the 4th grade, we were all the closest of friends.
I'd met Mike a long time ago, in kindergarten, actually. When I was on the swings. He had came up to me, and he had asked if I'd like to be his friend.
Nowadays I could barely stop thinking about that day, and how we wouldn't be where we are today if he hadn't-Suddenly, a noise shook me from my thoughts and I lost control of my bike.
Tumbling into the ditch, I felt my neck grow cold as I came back to reality. Everything around me was growing increasinly darker and I could feel a chill run up my spine.
Hearing another noise, I glanced around frantically to assess the situation, before quickly realizing I wasn't necessarily far from my house. Yet, it had felt as if thousands of eyes were watching me from all around, lurking in shadows preparing an attack.
Without really thinking I quickly began scrambling back to my house through the wooded short cut, leaving my bike where it was. I could just get it tomorrow morning, when I was on my way to school.Entering the house, it didn't take a second to realize it was dark and to my dismay, was apparently barren of population. The feeling at the back of my neck only grew stronger though, and instinctively I began looking for my family.
"Mom? Jonathan?"
I began growing increasingly paranoid. They were usually home by this point, at the very least Jonathan was. But not today. It was silent. Well, that was until my dog came running out, barking harshly. I kneeled down next to him, yet continued to call out in the slightest hope that they may have just been sleeping.
"Mom! Jonathan! Where are you?"Now, in any regular case scenario I would, as most would, put it off as nothing. I probably just heard an animal running along, yet why did everything feel so... wrong? Almost as if I wasn't even in the real world anymore.
The continuous feeling of something watching me didn't cease, and I couldn't manage to convince myself I was overreacting. It's fine. You're fine. Nothing's there.
But what if there is? What if something comes and... and attacks you? What if something is in here, waiting to kill you?
By then I had completely freaked myself out.
"Mom! Jonathan!"Leaving the house, I hurried to the shed to find something I could defend myself with. I knew we had a hunting gun somewhere, so if a creature ever planned to attack I could get back at it. When in the midst of thought, I jumped at the sounds of another noise. At this point there was no way I was just hearing things, right? I felt myself grow more nerved by the second, that couldn't be a bear. Surely not. Turning on the lights, I began rummaging through the shed and felt an intense sense of relief as I noticed what I had been looking for. Grabbing the gun, I attempted to load it as fast as I could knowing whatever noise was out there, it was getting closer. The lights then started to flicker, and as I glanced towards them I cried out in frustration--this wasn't going to make things easier.
