Jane was getting close now, I could hear her faint breath fade in and out, slowly and in monotone. I feel like I'd been running for ages, but I wasn't about to stop any time soon. I wondered how nobody else saw this giant beam of light chasing a freshman around campus, but that was far beyond my main concern. She was slowly catching up to me. There was only one way I could turn at this point. It was a long, narrow alley that separated the gymnasium and classrooms. I ran down the alley, knowing that this is where my story would end. There was nowhere to go. All the doors near me were locked. I was too small to jump the eight foot fence behind me, and even if I did that there was just another wall on the other side. Jane's shadow was cast along the wall, and she was getting closer. As she turned the corner, I saw no light. That's weird, I thought, because when I saw her earlier, she was nothing but it. She turned the corner, and looked just like she did when I first saw her. Striped shirt, the sweatshirt now tied around her waist. She approached me cautiously. What was this, some kind of mind game? As my final moments flashed before my eyes, Jane spoke.

"Calm down, I won't hurt you. I just want to talk."

I wasn't dead. My heart was racing, somewhat from all the running I did, but mostly from me trying to comprehend what I was hearing. She wanted to talk?

 "Y-You don't want to k-kill me?"

"No, i'd never kill anyone. I just want to talk."

"About what?"

For some reason, it seemed like she was trying to be nice. Maybe she wasn't some death-angel. Maybe she wasn't gonna kill me. I wasn't sure though, so I kept my guard up.

"You can't tell ANYONE about what you saw. Got it?"

I stumbled back a bit, trying to find my words.

"Y-Yeah. I got it."

"Good. Then we can continue. Let's start over. I'm Jane. Jane Granbur."

I was startled about how she was acting so normal.

"What do you mean start over? You're gonna tell me that I didn't just see the evil incarnation of death itself!?"

"I know you have lots of questions, but not here. There are too many people, and someone will hear us. Come to my place tonight. Eight o'clock."

She proceeded to write down her address on a piece of crumpled paper, and handed it to me. Before I could say anything, Jane ran off and seemingly disappeared from my view. Was that another power? Or was it just bad eyesight? I didn't know what was real anymore. I couldn't tell Saph. I was worried that Jane would hurt her if I did, so I tried my best to avoid her. The rest of the day seemed to last forever. Seconds seemed like minutes. Minutes, hours. After what felt like an eternity, the final bell rang. I rushed out of class, hoping to not see Saph along the way. Seems like my luck was running out, because there she was, and she seemed off. Like she was hiding something. I couldn't judge her, seeing as I was hiding the biggest secret of all. I walked past her, keeping my head down as to try and avoid her. I hated this. Saph is my best friend, and I was pushing her away. The only thing I could think about rang in my mind like a song stuck in your head. Should I tell her? I want to. I decided the best way to avoid her was to take the bus, seeing as we normally walk home together. I would just tell her I had to be home early today. The bus ride was loud. Kids throwing things at each other. Always yelling to one another, even though they were right next to each other. I tried to block them out, which was easy considering the fact that I spent the whole ride thinking about the things I saw in the janitors closet. I even tried to tell myself that I was dreaming, going so far as to pinch myself in the process. I could imagine what Jane had done with the power she had. I didn't even know what she could do. All I remembered was light. I got off the bus, and walked inside the house. It was the same as always, shoes on the floor to your right as soon as you walked in. Stairs right in front of you, and the kitchen and dining room were to the left. My room was upstairs, across the hall from my dads and next to the bathroom. My room was mostly messy, with clothes spread around like butter, and my garbage can filled with chips and failed drawings i'd attempted the night before with Saph. I tried to pass the time, anxiously awaiting eight. I tried to sleep, tried to watch movies, and I tried to draw some more. All I got were cramps and bad drawings. It was nearing six now, and my dad had just got home. He made his awesome home-cooked chicken with stew, potatoes and slightly salted garlic sticks. Jane consumed my mind, so it was relatively quiet. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my dinner. Dad's chicken was my favorite, just beating out Saph's tacos. She was a surprisingly good cook, which she learned from her aunt. Me and my dad talked for a bit, mostly just me trying to fill the time until eight. I thought I should leave a little early so I'd be able to check out the surroundings and see if Jane wanted to kill me. And so I set out of my house, giving my dad a hug while ironically lying and saying I was hanging with Saph. The journey had just begun.
