You were sleeping in your kotatsu - no you were trying to sleep in your kotatsu as your friend Makoto Tachibana sat there along with you. You both didn't have anything to do during New Year's. Your friends were on vacation with their boyfriends and Makoto's friends were doing things too. Ah....you wish you had a boyfriend...someone like Makoto, kind and gentle. But..it wasn't like you felt something for him...maybe. As you were thinking to yourself about things to do in the new year, Makoto suddenly got up. "Eh, Makoto-kun? Where are you going?" you asked him.
"Oh...," he said back awkwardly, "um..." A faint blush tainted his cheeks. "Want to go to a festival with me Y/N-chan?"
"A festival..? You mean at the shrine?" Makoto nodded quickly. "I haven't been to one in a long time...ok I'll go with you," you said as you got up. Maybe you could wear that yukata your mom brought you a few years back...hopefully its still fits, you haven't grown much lately anyway. And compared to you, Makoto was pretty tall, he was 183 cm while you were only 162 cm, it was a pretty big difference. You sighed. "When is the festival? I'll meet you there, okay?"
"Oh, its at the closest Shinto Shrine, its a summer festival," he replied, "So...meet me at 7:00?" You smiled and nodded as he left and closed the door. What should you wear? Wow, that was a hard decision...you were really thinking about the yukata, but maybe it was too formal? Maybe you should wear your favorite t-shirt and a skirt...or no you could wear the cute dress you bought the other day. In the end, you decided to just wear the yukata. Then, suddenly you realized....weren't you going on a...date? When the thought struck you, your face went red - or at least you thought so because it felt like it was burning. Just the thought of this made you feel happy and tingly inside..but maybe a little nervous too. This was going to be your first "date" after all. So, you did your best to make your hair, and everything else, look nice - because maybe he would compliment you. Eventually you headed out to the Shinto Shrine and saw Makoto standing at the entrance already with a small goldfish in his hands. As he looked up, he smiled at you and walked over.
"Here Y/N-chan," he said as he handed you the goldfish, "This is for you." You felt your face flush red and you happily accepted the gift. Makoto looked at you top to bottom making you feel awkward, but then he looked directly into your eyes and said, "You look beautiful Y/N- chan." Wow...he actually complimented you! Now you absolutely knew you were blushing, and Makoto just chuckled.
"You want to make our New Year's wishes before the hanabi (fireworks) start?" you said. Makoto simply nodded and walked toward the shrine and you followed. You rang the bell as you and Makoto shut your eyes to make a wish. I wish that i will have a lot of fun this year and maybe find love..was what you wished. Makoto touched your shoulder and said, "Are you done? I think it's time for the fireworks to start..." You nodded and then he took your wrist and led you to an empty area to see the fireworks. The first one went off. As you both stared at the bright lights in the dark sky you said,"Its really pretty isn't it?"
"...not as pretty as you...," Makoto said quietly. You blushed. What? You looked over at him. He had a grin plastered on his face and said again, "They're not as pretty as you." Your blushing intensified. WHAT? No no, this couldn't be real, could it? But without any hesitation you decided that you would do something you would never think of...
"I like you." Now it was his turn to blush. He immediately changed the subject and said," S-so what did you wish for Y/N-chan?"
"Oh I wished that I could....find love..." Then he finally noticed that the subject refused to be changed and so he said, "I wished that I could be with you." Oh god, did he feel the same way? More blushing happened. The rest of the night, the two of you stared at the fireworks once again, but this time, you were holding hands.
