In a world full of alphas, betas and omegas, mates vary from one to a ton. Children of the Great Wolf are born with a mate. Regular humans have died out centuries ago. Mates can vary from Omega to Omega, beta to beta, alpha to alpha, Omega to alpha, etc etc. The way to find out how much and what your mate (s) are is by a tattoo that you're born with.

If your mate dies, the tattoo will disappear. A great pain is felt to the lonely mate until they die. Great pain is also felt when your mate rejects you or cheats on you. Infidelity is highly illegal as it can cause violent chain reactions through populations like the alpha or beta groups.
The way to find your mate is to make direct eye connect. A warmth that nearly feels like putting a lighter directly underneath your tattoo. The tattoo is often times placed either on the wrist, chest, stomach and inner thigh.
Male omegas and betas can get pregnant, but only doing heavy heat.
Heats depends on how closely related to the Great Wolf you are. If you are a direct descendant of the Great Wolf, heats/ruts are powerful enough to be sensed from miles away. It starts at the age of 18 and ends around age 40-50. A heat is only for omegas and betas.
Alphas, however, have ruts. Ruts is the time when sperm is most abundant. This often causes what's called a knot, which is a swelling at the base of... Ahem, the male organ. This knot often lodges itself into the females... Organ and releases an abundant amount of semen into the body. Ruts only happen to alphas and betas.
Betas both have ruts and heats because they are half submissive and half dominant. They can get pregnant and they can also impregnate. Betas are rare whereas there are many omegas and alphas in the world. Betas tend to have two mates, a alpha and an omega.
Omegas are submissive beings. They are thought to be fragile, pretty little things and are mostly only used to make pups (or children). Any gender of omegas can get pregnant. All omegas have heats. If an Omega is male and his alpha is a woman, then and only then, will the omega have a rut much like the alpha.
Alphas are the dominant species of the three species. They are direct descendants of the Great Wolf whereas omegas and betas are a mix of human and wolf. Alphas take up more than half of the population in the world. They only rut and knot their mates. Alphas are known for their cold attitudes and dominant aura.
