🌹Walking around my house, I felt myself smile. This party is a huge success. I glanced at the clock and saw it's 8:15. I think it's about time we wind down. ❝Hey mom?❞
❝Yeah Y/n?❞ she asked, turning around.❝Can we cut the cake?❞ I asked. She nodded and clapped her hands a few times. ❝Attention everyone. Can we all gather around the table for cake?❞ the room erupted in applause as I took my seat at the table. My mom lit the candles as everyone started singing the familiar birthday song. ❝Make a wish Y/n!❞ Fawn said excitedly, shaking my shoulders.
❝Okay, okay!❞ I said. The room grew quiet as I closed my eyes. What should I wish for? I pretty much have everything I want and need. I have a sturdy routine and- hey, that could be fun. I wish for this year to have surprises! I blew out the candles and looked around. My closest friends and family cheered and I felt happy and finally at peace.
I didn't even think about my ceremony. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the bushes outside the window shake. I furrowed my brows in confusion. ❝Hey mom? Can I step outside for a bit?❞ I asked. She nodded. ❝Just five minutes, then come inside for presents.❞

I went to my closet and grabbed my black hoodie. As soon as I pulled it over my head, I heard the door open. Immediately I knew it was Sarah. She walked in and set her purse down on the table as usual. I held my hand out, ready for the injection when she spoke up. ❝You can put your hand down. I'm not giving you that tonight.❞❝How come?❞ I asked confused.
❝I want this to be real for you. These injections just keep the people in line and label them as health benefits. It's all a cover up though.❞ I watched as she placed the key on the counter. ❝Be careful.❞ she smiled softly. I gave her a nod as to say I will. But her vagueness about the injections confused me. ❝Wait, why would you tell me that?❞ I asked. She smiled before she answered.
❝Next year I'm scheduled to be someone else's nurse. I wouldn't be with you anymore, I wanted you to know the truth.❞ Then she left. She didn't turn back or say anything else. I grabbed the key and slipped it into my pocket I snapped the watch on and headed for the back window.
My heart was racing a mile a minute as I put my hands on the locks of the window. I pulled them down and slid up the glass pane. Then, first the right leg, then the left, I snuck out of the window; the first thing I did was breathe. I mean really just breathe. Breathe in the non-congested air around me. My arms, free and not cuffed. I spun around like a kid. A normal kid. I thought to myself. This is so worth it.

I'd been walking behind houses for about an hour now and figured I should head back when I heard the faintest music. So naturally, I was drawn to what was being played. I kept walking and the music grew louder and louder. I got up to a window and saw a party going on inside. Awh how come I wasn't invited? I love a good party. I looked around at all the faces and suddenly I saw her.
That same girl from earlier. The one with her friends. Speaking of, there was the guy. They looked so happy. Pft happiness? What's that? They all gathered around the cake on the table and sang happy birthday. That same guy looked at her, as she closed her eyes and made a wish, with so much... affection?
I feel jealous. I don't even know them. Why should their actions have any effect on me? I leaned in closer to look at her. Well I leaned in too close, too fast. I fell into the bushes and hoped and prayed no one saw me. When I looked up, she was staring back. I gotta get out of here. I thought to myself. I crouched down and started creeping back to my house when-
