I won't say that what I did wasn't extremely risky.
I had lured Harold outside of the police station the next morning and gotten in 38 swings until Evalyn hollered at me from the car to get going. I counted every single blow and cherished blow 15, which left his jaw hanging limply, and blow 31, which is when he stopped responding to my abuse.
I knew Evalyn had wanted to get a few punches in on the prick, but we both agreed that that would be beyond risky. She at least had the pleasure of watching me do a fraction of what she and I would love to do to that man.
We had left town straight after that, me driving like the hounds of hell were after us. With snacks and meals loaded into the car Lilith had given us in exchange for the house, we made few stops, simply switching drivers when one of us got tired.
It was nearly 24 hours later when we arrived dog-tired, but unscathed at the Brown's house. I have never been so happy to see a bathtub and full-sized bed in my life.
But, at the end of the day, it was worth it.
The ravaged house.
The relocation.
The lost relationships.
All those things paled in comparison to the woman I held in my arms that morning, as we both drifted off to sleep.
"William?"
"Hmm?" was all I could muster.
"I would go through everything again if it meant being with you."
I took a deep breath, capturing the scent of cocoa butter. I squeezed her slightly, imprinting the slope and curve of her body against mine in my mind. I let out a breath of thanks to God for bringing her to me.
"I feel the same exact way, doll."
"We're going to have quite the story to tell our children and grandchildren."
I chuckled, quickly losing the battle to sleep.
"Well, hopefully this country will be better one day and they won't have to go through what we have if they want to be with someone outside of their race. Who knows, we may even have celebrities or presidents who will be mixed like them."
It was Evalyn's turn to chuckle.
"Maybe one day."
Maybe one day.
