Severus had never paid any mind to the half giant on school grounds, or his lack of fear when it came to creatures. Hagrid, however, always paid attention to the potions master; he found him ever so very very fascinating.
The first time they actually spoke, willingly, was on the bridge. Hagrid had been traveling across and Severus was resting on it; once Hagrid was spotted, Severus nodded and started conversation that the larger man was only too eager to engage in.
They spoke for awhile. Severus didn't know why; he hated talking to people. He supposed it was because Hagrid only saw the good in people. He would ignore most bad things about people.
Severus made a snide remark about being the most hated man in Britain, and Hagrids face practically fell.
"No yer not!" He spoke with more confidence than Severus would ever have in himself and continued, "Yer jus' misun'erstood. Like er... like a Hippogriff! You need people to respect yer before you respect 'em. You need yer personal space, and people push on her boundaries. Is all." Hagrid finished with a big smile, and Severus returned a small one.
"Thank you, Rubeus." He spoke so quiet he almost wasn't heard.
They had a few more meetups over the years. Talking about Harry and co. And when the war came around, Hagrid was all to eager to help Severus look after the students even after everything he had done.
When he was informed Severus was dead, he insisted on giving him a proper burial.
Hagrid missed him, the dour man that he was. But Hagrid always loved dangerous creatures.
