Chapter 2

26 2 10

The monster was on its hind legs and scratching at the front window, almost breaking it inwards, Jim trying the hardest to get it started finally did, after what felt like hours. The monster was now lifting its claw to swipe at the glass, it brought its claw down just as Jim reversed. The monster slipped backwards scratching the front of the car, making a horrible sound similar to scratching a chalkboard.

Jim drove as fast as he could leaving the monster in the dust, he was relieved, although the monster was still alive and kicking, he felt safe in his car. He had no idea where he would go but he knew he didn’t want to be here.

Jim decided he will make a quick stop at his local pub to see if anyone else has noticed anything strange. He pulled his car into the car park and remembered about his back, although he didn’t know how bad it really is.

‘Yes’ he decided ‘I’ll get someone in the pub to fix me up’.

Jim walked up to the front wooden door of the pub and saw all the usual locals there, Billy, Alfred and co., there was also Sarah, the barmaid. The town must have regained power as the bar was bursting out with light.

‘Hey, Sarah?’ Jim stuttered

Sarah Stood there blankly, her eyes staring into his soul.

‘You don’t think you could fix my back up for me? It’s killing me!’

No response.  Tim now looking around to see if any of the locals were seeing this, realised something that made his spine shiver. No one moved, no one said anything they all were frozen.

‘CAN YOU HEAR ME!?’ Jim Shouted

Still no reply. He was almost hysterical, he went behind the counter and gave Sarah a small nudge, to realise that she was as cold as a winter’s day. He went and had a look at the other locals, when the pain started to really kick in, the adrenalines wearing off.

The bar was small, with only enough room for a few people but was big enough. The bar running along the back of the building and tables along the opposite side against the front windows, the men’s and ladies toilets located on either side. Behind the bar was a door that led into the store-room, Jim Hoped that there would be a first aid kit back there.

He went behind the bar and into the store-room to feel a cold chill rush upon him, he could feel the coldness of the concrete floor rush through his shoes and his body. He scanned the area, right in front of him was a large garage door, to his left a door with a pin lock, probably a safe he thought to himself. He saw a first aid kit hanging next to the door and tried to run for it, but the best he could do was a fast jog. He opened the first aid kit up and grabbed some bandages and some antiseptic and went to the men’s room.

He threw the supplies onto the bathroom bench and turned the taps handle. The tap let out a loud spurt and then burst into life, giving Jim the gift of water. Jim2 took off his now wrecked top carefully, to not disturb his bloody wound on his back. He cupped some cold water in his hand, held his breath and threw it over his back, it stung. He them grabbed the bottle of antiseptic and did his best to lather his back in it, it stung 10 times worse than the water did. He was in pain. He slowly unravelled one of the rolls of bandages and wrapped it around the lower half of his body, he clipped it up and grabbed the second roll and wrapped it around his upper half.

Jim looked at himself. His face looked tired as if he hasn’t slept for one million years. He was only young, in fact he just moved out of his parents’ house last year. His hazel eyes glowing in the artificial light, while the thunder still roared in the background. Millions of thoughts ran through Jim’s mind, where will I go? Is that thing still at home? What happened to everyone? Will the power go out again? As soon as that thought hit that question there was a deafening roar, just before the power once again went down. Jim drank the rest of the night away with the human mannequins, still not sure this night has fully sunk in.
