You know those moments where you almost feel like you're dreaming or in a panoramic view of a movie? That's how I felt. My aunt was looking at me as if I had murdered a man and I couldn't help but shift uncomfortably as the envelope glowed from within my pocket.
"George," she was talking carefully as if I was a child playing with my toys again; "where did you find... how did you get..." She thought for a moment. "What do you know?"
I told her everything. About the safe in her brothers office, about the ghost. About the demon and the keys magical transportation powers. I felt insane as I said all of this, but I knew with every part of me that it had happened.
"I can still feel the grass under me and the wind pushing the trees." I looked to my aunt who had been silently listening and asked "why is this happening to me? What does this mean?"
She looked at me and thought for a second, then smiled lightly. "I don't think you understand," she held her tea in her lap and let the fading steam rise to her cheeks. "George, you weren't picked for anything. You found those and the note yourself. Yes, I'm sure in some way it was meant to happen by strings of fate; but, it wasn't anyone's choice over who got it with how abruptly John and his wife passed." She directed her attention to her wrist and looked at my glowing pocket. I pulled out the envelope, feeling the same energy as before. My aunt took the envelope in her hands and, only then, did I realize that it was the letter that had accumulated the heavenly glow around its edges. I peeked over at the letter to see words being formed at the bottom of the page:
Circumstances may be accidental, but were meant to be in the end.
I read the words over and over again while my aunt seemed to be in deep thought. I felt so clueless. I had been dropped into a sea of information and I still was blind to it all. I wanted answers.
"Aunt Rebecca?"
"Yes?" She came back from thought. I laid everything from the envelope across the table, including a deceased golden butterfly I'd kept from the demon incident.
"Tell me.. Tell me everything."
She smiled and nodded, placing her empty tea cup on the table.
"Very well."
