You lay in bed, frozen for hours, while staring at nothing. Dodger and Bullet spent their whole afternoon trying to make you smile but it didn't help. Chris wasn't home yet and you were in your scrubs, wrapped in a thick blanket with only your face showing.
You hear Chris coming home in half an hour after Dodger and Bullet finally left you alone. You hear him call out to you. Probably because you left your bag on the floor next to the shoe rack, which you never do because you place it on your study desk. But it was a different day today.
"You home already? Why didn't you call?" He yelled from the front door. You don't answer. You now hear him enter the bedroom.
"Love? Are you asleep?" He calls out. You still don't answer. He walks up to you and takes a look at you. You don't have the slightest bit of energy to look at him.
"Hey. What happened?" You can sense that he was already worried. You still don't say anything. He kneels down in front of you. You feel him touch your face softly. He turns them to his direction. You finally take a look at him. He's waiting for you to say something. You stare at him for a long time. You slowly open your mouth to speak and feel your throat that was very dry by now.
"I lost my very first patient today." You managed to squeak very quietly. You look at his eyes and he suddenly became alerted, now that he was aware of the situation. Chris immediately hops on the bed and then forces you to face him. He softly placed his hand on your back and pulls you closer to him.
"What happened?" He caressed your hair and kissed the top of your head. You never cried after what happened. Your attending doctor let you go home after. You didn't cry on your drive home. And you thought that you didn't have the energy to do so until Chris enveloped you in his arms. Your lips began to tremble.
"Her name was Allison. She was six. I called it." A tear fell out of your eye as you remember the how close you and Allison got over the last few months at the hospital. You loved Allison, she was a bubbly and sweet little girl who didn't deserve to be taken away from the world too soon.
"She told me she wanted to become just like me when she grew up. She wanted to become a doctor." You struggled to say as your soft cries turned into loud wails. Your shoulders were trembling as you poured out every pain you were holding in your heart.
"I know, I know. The world's fucking cruel. Just cry it out, baby." Chris softly said as he hugged you tighter. You broke down in his arms, where you felt the safest.
"You'll get through this, okay? I will help you." Chris rubs his hand on the small of your back. You use his sweater to wipe of your tears.
"I'm sorry, baby. That's just how the world works. God, it's fucking unfair and you have the right to get angry at the world, you do." He kisses your temple as you slowly stopped crying. He held your tear stained face on his hand and lifted it up.
"I am here for you. I love you. You are stronger than this and you will get through this, okay?" You stare at him as he said those words that just melted your heart. He kisses your forehead and hugs you in his arms again.
You both just lay on the bed for almost half an hour, no one saying anything. He just caressed your hair and held you as you took a rest from all the crying.
"I'm hungry." You murmured. He softly chuckles.
"Come, on. I'll make you pancakes, since you ready taught me how to last week." He laughs as you both stand up on the bed to go to the kitchen. He walks ahead of you and you grab his shirt from behind. He stops on his tracks and takes a worried look at you.
"What is it?" He worriedly says.
"I forgive the world." You say to him. His forehead creased.
"What?" He asks, confused. You reach for his hand and held it tight. You smile at him for the first time today.
"I forgive the world because it has you."
