Butterfly Wings

Another grey sky, dark clouds passing by as I sit by the window of the rehab facility. The only real beauty here is the butterflies. Whether it's cold, raining, snowing or sunny, there are always butterflies soaring and gliding through the sky. Sighing, I turn back to my book and continue reading.

"Rae, Rae!" I jump at the sound of the Nurse Violet's voice. "Rae it's time for group therapy, and would you put that book away! It's the 5th time you've read it since you were admitted! Now come on".
Nodding, I set the book down on the window sill and walk to the therapy room.

I know my way around quite well, since I was admitted 7 months ago. It gets quite lonely in here. Not many people to talk to, well, besides the psychologist and the chef.

I reached the room, and sat down, looking at all the familiar faces. "Nice for you to join us Rae, now, who would like to tell us about their day first?" Obviously its Jeff, he's always so persistent on being first in everything. He has an extremely bad case of OCD. Gets quite irritating sometimes.

While Jeff started talking about the rubbish breakfast and how they didn't count the numbers of cornflakes they put in his bowl, I gazed at the small amount of sun peaking through the clouds. Wondering if anyone misses me, or even talks about me. You see, I'm from California.. but my mom and step dad decided to move here to Cincinnati when they got married. Just so he could be close to his family. And then they found out that their precious daughter had issues, and they couldn't have that, so they admitted me into this stupid institution.

I hate it here, but it's better than being at home, alone, mom is always on business trips, and Gary is always working at his shop.

I hear my name being called, but my eyes are so comfortable in this daze, that I ignore whoever is trying to get my attention.
"Rae please, the quicker you tell us about your day, the quicker you and all of us can get out of this room". I recognized this voice, its Rosa, the old lady who hates everyone. Well she likes the old pharmacist.. but let's not get into that.

"Fine, my day was great". Everyone sighed knowing that Dr Fuchs is going to ask me more questions. "Is that all Rae? Because Nurse Violet told me you read that book again. Will you ever tell us what it's about and why it's so important to you?". I glared at her for bringing it up, and got up, pushing the chair away and walking straight out.

I'm so tired of this place, I just want to run away! I walk to the window sill, grab my book and go to my room. That's one thing I'm grateful for. I have my own room, no roommate, just me myself and I.
I plonk down onto my bed and open the book on the very first page. Reading the writing, my heart aches. You see, this isnt just a book, this is an artwork. This was my dads book for me. He wrote in it every day, since he found out my mother was pregnant.
I remember the first time I read it.

"I have no clue what to write in here, but I'm doing this for you, little bean. You see, your mama just told me I'm going to be a father! If only you could see how happy I am, my little bean. I know there's a long way to go, but I just want to meet you already! To see your beautiful face, kiss your cute chubby cheeks. Feed you, cuddle your tiny little body. Although I'm not too excited about changing your stinky diapers, but I'll do that just because I love you!"

You see, this is the only thing I have of my dad left. He died when I was 15. He had pancreatic cancer and it was found too late.
He died 2 months after finding out.

Sighing, I put the book into my bedside drawer, and grab my earphones. Right now, I just want to get lost in music.
I close my eyes and just let it take over.

I guess I fell asleep, as I didn't hear any knocking, or Nurse Violet and Dr Schultz come into my room.
"Ms Rivera, wake up, we have something important to tell you."
"Oh dear Dr, she can't hear you, she has those electronic things in her ears. Let me wake her up"

Nurse Violet walked to Rae's bed and started shaking her awake.
" Can I not sleep in peace for once! What is it?" I whisper shouted.
"Well Rae, dont take it out on me, its Dr Schultz who wanted to talk to you". Said Nurse Violet in her deep southern accent, while pointing to Dr.

I sit up and get off my bed. "What's up doc? Can I go home?" I asked. "Not today Ms Rivera, but tomorrow that bed next to you is going to be occupied. So please remove all of your belongings and pack them away. I have told you countless of times to clean this place up" said Dr. I look around and see a couple of books on the bed across the room. "Are you serious? Why cant the other patient get a different room? Why my room?" I shouted.
"Well you see Rae, you need to interact with someone close to your age, as well as have some contact with the human species. Now I have a long list of patients who need to be assessed."
They both nod and walk out of the room, or at least attempt to. Nurse Violet walked  right into the wall and fell to the ground. I cough to try cover up my laughing, but when Violet starts laughing, I couldn't hold it in anymore!
I'm not one to laugh much, but this was priceless!

Over the next couple of hours I listened to music, sang a bit, then went to eat dinner, came back to my room and fell asleep hoping my roommate is at least nice.
