Chapter One
Queen Glacier prodded her bejeweled scales, waiting for her daughter to return.
Horizon stood next to her, his talons twitching feebly. His wings shuddered as he tried to bask in the passing sunlight that dared to enter the rightful dome of the IceWing Queen and her daughter.
"Oh where is Blizzard? She should have arrived moments ago!" Glacier whined ruefully, tapping her elegant wings against the snow. She burrowed her talons into the fresh white ground as she snuggled into the heap of scattered snowflakes.
Horizon padded his wings on hers gently. "She should be arriving quite soon. I assure you, that your daughter will-"
"Mother! I'm home!" a loud dragonet voice called. The female dragonet from high above clamped her wings shut and dove into the awaiting dome, landing perfectly on her feet.
Queen Glacier flapped her wings appealingly and lunged for her into a gently nuzzle. Blizzard, the dragonet that was about 17 years old, giggled softly as a plume of smoke burst out her nostrils.
"What took you so long?" Glacier said, prodding her daughter's spines with her fangs.
Blizzard hunched her shoulders. "A SandWing was clearly in my way. Distracting me. He looked like a rouge." She looked at Horizon mournfully. "No offense."
Horizon shrugged. "It's fine. And yes, there is a SandWing rouge on the loose."
Queen Glacier gasped slowly. "Well then," she said, awkwardly clearing her throat. "Now that you're here . . . go relax."
Blizzard sighed heavily and lowered her shoulders, trudging over under an evergreen tree. She poked a talon on a pine and plucked it off. She examined it carefully and flicked it away, then she coiled her tail against her hind leg and curled her scales together.
Horizon looked at Glacier with an innocent look, which made the Queen raise a brow.
"What is it, Horizon?" she asked calmly.
Horizon frowned. "It's just that . . . that SandWing rouge was my younger brother. His name is Flare. He went rouge from stealing our own tribe's egg. Eventually, that egg vanished into the sand as he was reported on dropping the egg on purpose."
Queen Glacier gasped. "Oh my."
"Yeah, it's bad. He's gone, now. A rouge is all he is now." Horizon frowned and slowly trotted to the exit doorway. He waved a talon at her and smiled a little, then darted back into the SandWing den.
The Queen smiled respectively and looked at her peaceful daughter. Tomorrow, you'll go out searching again . . . But all I hope is that you're safe.

Blizzard awoke from her gently slumber with a soft yawn. She flexed her claws and leaned her head back, then stretched out her wings. She lazily staggered up to stand and strode near the exit. The moon was still bright in the sky. No dragons flying around. Only guards barricading the SandWing's territory. She gazed up at the twinkling stars, then dashed out without a trace.
She shot into the night sky and blasted through a faded cloud, then flew straight. She flew far off in the never ending desert dunes, barrel-rolling passed groups of hoarding dusk clouds. She finally ended her flight with a loud thump on the soft sands. The small pebbles shrouded over her sharp talons. She mindlessly dug her snout into the fresh sands, and trailed off.
