"Don't worry mother, your child is a warrior."
SERENA NAVEENA BLACK
was often known as 'Ducky' prior to her move due to her thick glasses, braces filled with vibrant colored bands, and a face riddled with acne from an early age. She was not your typical girl next door as she was often found down in the dirt with her little brother, Jacob and his two best friends Embry Call and Quil Ateara V. Them four got into trouble so many times Serena had lost count. When she wasn't getting into trouble with the boys Serena would be found in the garage working on something with Billy. Things though changed not long after she turned twelve and Rebecca coming home from Hawaii with Billy informing Serena she will be moving to Oahu. Billy's reason for this was he believed she was no longer happy on the reservation. The youngest female Black of course retaliated and told Billy she was, but he wasn't having it and so by the end of the week Serena had her things packed. The hardest thing Serena ever had to do was probably saying goodbye to Jacob--to La Push; her home. After moving to Oahu she at first had a hard time finding her place on the small island but thanks to her brother in law Solomon, he helped Serena find a passion in surfing. Oh what such raw talent the young Quileute possessed. She soon began to compete in competitions such as Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard, North Shore Surf Shop Pro Junior, Hawaii Surf Association Surf Series, Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle--you name it and either Serena or Solomon were competing. The nickname Ducky she so dearly hated became nothing more than something of the past as puberty came in and gave her a glow up. Something she never thought would happen to her.
Despite being almost three thousand miles away, Serena always kept in touch with Jacob. How could she not? Prior to her move the two were basically joined at the hip. Thanks to Skype being invented the two almost always video called one another and at times Embry or Quil would be in the background making weird faces at Serena. God how those video calls made her homesick, but oh the adventures she had dived into living on the small island. At first the feeling of missing the Reservation didn't affect her much, but as the years went by it soon felt as if someone punched her in the gut.
At the age of seventeen with only a few more months shy of finishing home school Serena found herself asking Billy to come home for senior year. She had a whole speech prepared on why she wanted--no, why she should finish her senior year back home and all Billy said was okay. This stumped Serena, but not slowing down to give the old man time to change his mind the young Quileute girl already had booked a one way ticket. As Serena sat on that plane she felt completely nervous. Nervous at what all has changed since she was there, what those who once tormented her will say about her looks now; everything. She knew surfing would be no problem and had already added cliff diving to the list of what to try. Just how much as things changed? That question kept running through her mind.
What Serena doesn't know that everything has changed to those who knew the truth of the tribe--of the cold ones, and everything to those who knew nothing of it remained the same. The real question is, will Serena be pulled into the supernatural world? It was inevitable for her brother, but will it be the same for her?
