James slowed gained consciousness. He could not fully open his eyes, but he saw people taking him somewhere. He saw Jessica beside him and he again slipped into unconsciousness.
James opened his eye. He was in a room, lying on a bed in a patient gown. He looked around, and there were several monitors, which showed his vitals. He unhooked the wires and got out of the bed. He had bandages at several places covering up the stitches. He could see bruises. He remembered the plane crashing and hitting the water. He walked to the edge of the room. The walls were glass, but tempered glass. He could not see through.
James stood there seeing his reflection on the glass wall. Then the glass slowly turned into a transparent one. There was a man on the other side of the glass.
"Hello, how are you feeling, Captain Edward?" the man on the other side asked.
"I am okay. Where am I? What is this place and how is Jessica? Is she ok?"
"She is good; we are running tests on her."
"So, what is this place and who are you?" James asked.
"I am Captain Viktor Nikolov, former Russian naval officer and the commander of this base," the man on the other side said.
"Base, what kind of base?" James asked.
"Consider this a Noah's Ark for mankind," the commander said.
"I don't understand," James replied.
"It is okay; we will explain everything. However, for now, you need to rest."
Before James could say another word, the glass turned opaque and Viktor disappeared. James was confused about everything, but he wasn't feeling well and could not do anything right now, so he returned to his bed.
Hours later the glass door opened and Viktor arrived with a fresh pair of clothes.
"You finally decided to let me out of this room."
"Sorry for the rudeness and for keeping you locked in but it was safer for all. We realized that you are immune, but we wanted to make sure that you are not a carrier. Lab results just came in and as we hoped, you are clean. I brought you a fresh pair of clothes. They probably will fit. Once you are ready, I will give you a tour of the facility and explain everything."
James changed into the clothes the commander had brought. They almost fit. James followed the commander out of the room and they passed through a decontamination chamber. It looked exactly like the one in CDC facility.
They entered huge concrete tunnels. The commander was leading the way and James was trying to keep up with him. There were people in the tunnels. Some were in military uniforms bearing non-lethal weapons and others wore white lab coats. Everyone was busy walking. The uniforms saluted the commander when he passed next to them and they looked at James as if he were an exotic being. With every person he encountered, James became happier.
James and the commander got to a bridge, from where they could oversee a huge lab. The lab looked more like a zoo for exotic species than the usual scientific room.
"Captain Edward, do you know what was the most important event in 2004?" the commander asked.
"Was it that we observed the largest tsunami ever recorded?" James replied.
"No, though the tsunami was a horrible event. I meant an event in space," the commander said.
"No, please enlighten me."
"It was for the first time we diverted an asteroid that would have hit the earth in 2012 by using the nuclear standoff method." The commander spoke carefully.
