[ Chapter 9: A Rude Awakening ]

Hi :)

So basically up to this point in the story Mary and Niall have been the happiest people ever with an amazing summer and a beautiful life...

But that is sadly not reality.

Soooo things are gonna be shaken up from now on because the beautiful summer has come to an end and so their unbreakable friendship must as well.

I've realized this is way too much a fantasy but wanted to end their summer on a good note: some friends.

Don't get me wrong, I love a perfect romance, oops, friendship as much as the next reader, but I need to practice writing the truth.

So here it is:

( Hope you enjoy the twist ;) )

{Mary}

My legs ache and my feet throb as I sprint as fast as I can down the dirt road in my poor footwear. Today was the wrong day to wear flip flops, and the wrong day to miss the bus.

And to add to the poor decisions I made this morning, including missing my alarm and waking up at 7:15, my stomach twists inside out at the thought of going back to school.

Niall had to leave for school without me and I pray to the Lord that I didn't forget anything. I barely brushed my hair and my breath could probably knock over a bear.

I turn the final corner and slow into a jog as I approach the school. The buses just arrived which for the first time this morning give me a relieved feeling.

Shyly walking behind the friends that rejoice at the sight of another, I try to find my bus and catch a glance at my only source of hope for today. I find the number and my heart sings as I wait a fair distance away.

"Come on, come on" I whisper to myself, trying not to get noticed by basically anyone.

'Have some confidence this year' the voice in my head reminds me for about the hundredth time, but I'm too insecure to do it.

Finally I see the blonde tips of his hair and eventually see the curios look in his bright blue eyes. I smile to myself and slink off on the outside to meet up with him without drawing attention to myself.

"Pss, Niall" I whisper loudly which catches his attention and his whole face lights up.

"Mary" he calls out and runs over to me and surrounds me in a huge, caring hug.

I squeeze him back and realize, this is the first time I've reunited with someone or at least met up at the beginning of the school year. And at that, my whole mood turns around.

"What happened to you this morning?" Niall looks uneasy at me.

Looking down, I see myself with dirt lining my inner legs, my toes bright red, my short's pockets untucked, a huge knot in my hair, and my bag unzipped with some pencils already missing.

"A rude awakening" I mumble to myself.

Niall nods and tries to help me clean myself up. A lady in a bright blue dress suit comes over to us with a big smile and asks us for our names.

"Niall Horan" he says confidently.

"Mary Leighton" I say quietly.

She flips through some papers and hands us both our newly laminated and colored coded schedules. I look at my locker number and homeroom first.
