•❅──────✧❅ Prologue ❅✧──────❅•
"Shit", you said, jumping up from your chair as you tried to save what was left to save. Not that your life wasn't miserable enough, you just spilled a full cup of hot coffee all over your desperate attempts to get your life together. Sighting in annoyance, you took your neatly printed - and now stained - job application, crumbled it to a miserable looking ball and threw it towards the corner of the room where your paper bin was positioned. Of course you missed. Another sigh escaped your mouth and you could feel an all so familiar feeling of hot tears in your eyes. There was no need of hiding anything, you were alone in your tiny apartment in Stockholm anyways, so you just buried your face in the palm of your hands and let the tears roll.
This is not what you had imagined when you were younger. You remembered it vividly, the times when your life wasn't a mess, although it was literally ages ago. Last month you turned 19, making it 4 years that your parents were dead.
Back then, you used to live a normal life. Average amount of friends, average amount of parents, average school grades, a guy you had a crush on, just average everything. You had all you wanted and all you needed, life was great back then.
One night, your parents didn't come home from their solo night out, a tradition they had for as long as you could remember. Once a month, the day of their monthly anniversary, they went out. Not exactly to celebrate the day itself, more just a really cute way to show their affection towards each other. They didn't gift each other anything, it was just a regular date, sometimes a restaurant, sometimes the movies, sometimes just a long walk. You didn't even ask what their plans were anymore, you didn't even know where they had been for their date until they just didn't come back. You remembered waiting for them, not being able to contact them because your beloved phone had broken a few days back. You played with the little charm that used to be attached to your phone, fondling with it to distract you from the nervousness and the terrible feeling you had. Normally you would've texted your best friend right now, telling him how you were on edge for no apparent reason, but all you used to have was his phone number stored on your phone's internal storage and thus, it was gone. And then - the knock on the door and your confusion on why your parents would knock on the door at 1 am. The knock that turned everything to shit.
Maybe they forgot their keys, you thought. But as you approached the front door, you could see blue light reflecting on the streets, making your heart drop. Hesitantly, you opened the door only to reveal a middle aged police officer. He took off his hat and looked at you with pure pity. You will never forget his look.
"Are you Misses (Y/L/N)?", he asked, trying hard to sound professional. He was visibly heart broken, and you couldn't shake the feeling that something very bad must have happened.
"Y-yes. What happened?" As soon as the question left your mouth you knew you didn't even want to know the answer.
"I am very sorry to inform you, but your parents passed away in a fire at the Hilton Restaurant. This must be very hard for you."
You didn't know how to process what he just said. This must be a dream, right?
Your parents dead? This couldn't be. How dare he tell you sick jokes at 1 am. Maybe he was some sort of intruder, kidnapper, robber, anything, just trying to confuse you before taking you with him? And thinking back, you would have rather wanted it that way instead of your parents just.. gone. Forever.
