Chapter 6: Sectionals-Part 1

"OK guys, after 5 weeks of preparation, the time has arrived. Get out there and make Sam and I proud. Scott, take it away." Scott stepped forward. "Alright hands in. Let's get out there and bring that trophy home. "AAAAAAA-MAZING!" New Directions shouted as they all walked towards the stage with a purpose.

Announcer: Ladies & Gentleman, welcome to the 2019 Sectionals for the Show Choir Competition of Ohio!!! First up, from Dalton Academy, The Warblers!!! Kitty looked a bit puzzled. "I thought their campus burned down." She said. "It got rebuilt a few years ago. An anonymous donor donated $80,000 to get the campus rebuilt." Sam explained. "Who was that anonymous donor?" Marley asked. Scott sighed and addressed the group. "It was me; I took $80,000 out of that trust fund our parents took out. It was going to be used for my college scholarship Kitty. I figured since I wasn't going to use it and rather than let it go to waste, I thought I would put it to good use." Kitty began to cry happy tears in front of him. "What you did for the Warblers, was one of the most selfless and kindest acts I've ever heard you do." She cried. "I just did what any good person would have done." Scott said as he smiled back at her. "You did the right thing Scott." Will said with a proud smile on his face. "Yeah." Scott said.

Moments later, the Warblers began their performance....

One hour later:

Announcer: And now, ladies and gentleman, from Carmel High in Akron, Ohio, please welcome "Vocal Adrenaline!"

During the men's group number, Scott noticed one of the girls from Vocal Adrenaline crying. "Hey, what's wrong with her?" Scott said pointing to the of the girls. "Oh no." Marley said worriedly. "Go ahead." Mr. Schue said, giving Scott & Marley permission to check on her. "Hey, are you OK?" Marley asked. "No. I've been throwing up all day, and I feel sick." the girl replied. "How do you feel physically?" Scott asked. "What do you mean?" "Are you throwing up because you're sick, or because you're nervous?" Marley elaborated. "Probably the latter." She said crying. "This is my first show choir competition in 4 years. I dropped out of school because I was bullied. I'm anorexic and worse, I don't like large crowds." Marley's heart began to sink, before she thought of her best words of wisdom. "Listen, I was just like you. Afraid of what might happen to me. I was afraid of being myself. After a while though, I gained the self-confidence I needed to make my star go on the rise. Then I not only found my voice, I found a group of people who I love and trust. What I'm trying to say is, just go out there and be yourself. Don't worry about what others think about you. You know who you are. You are a star, regardless of what anyone says about you and this is your moment to shine." "You really think so?" the girl replied, sniffling. "I know it." Marley smiled warmly back at her. "Thanks, you're really nice you know?" "Thanks, I get that a lot. My name is Marley Rose by the way." "Andrea Cohen, and thanks." Andrea went to join her teammates, but not before looking back towards Scott. "Hey, what's your name?" She asked. "Scott Wilson." Scott answered. "Thanks for checking on me." Andrea said. "Hey, we may be competitors, but we do look out for others, cause it's the right thing to do." Andrea smiled nicely back at Scott, before shaking her head yes, and joining her other teammates on stage.

Andrea smiled and joined up with Sunshine Corazon and began to sing a duet:

The crowd cheered and applauded their performance. Marley & Scott had smiles on their face as Andrea took a bow. "You're a badass." Marley said to Scott smiling. "I know I am. You know, you're a lot more strong-willed than you might think Marley." Scott replied. "Really?" Marley asked. "Yeah." Scott said.

Everyone except Sunshine began to clear the stage in preparation for her solo. With that, Sunshine started singing:

The audience applauded and cheered Sunshine's performance, then Andrea and the rest of Vocal Adrenaline came on stage in tight spandex and fancy make-up. "What the hell is this?" Kitty yelled softly. "It's a damn psych job, that's what." Jake said in disgust. "It's a great idea; we didn't think of it." Marley said with observation. "What did you guys expect? Scott told you Vocal Adrenaline would be going for our throat this year." Spencer said. "Damn it, do I hate being right all the time." Scott said with a bit of irritation in his voice.

With that, Vocal Adrenaline began to sing their group ensemble number:

The audience applauded Vocal Adrenaline's performance. "OK guys, we're up." Sam said. Unfortunately, no one moved from New Directions, they just stood there like an intimidated bunch.

Uh-oh. Has Vocal Adrenaline used this psych job to get in the head of New Directions? That was a brilliant move using tight spandex and makeup for their group ensemble number. Will New Directions be able to pull it together? They only have a 5 minute break!!!
