Chapter One: The "Happiest Day" of Her Life
Adriena's mother had always told her that the happiest day of any one's life was the day they got married. Adriena looked forward to her marriage. It was arranged, of course, as was the custom of the time and she had never met the human prince she was to marry. But, she was soon reluctant when she knew why she was to marry Winchester Delacortez. For the sake of her people she would marry him to form a peace treaty between the warring realms.
The wedding had been beautiful, enhanced by the magic of the Fey. It took place in the woods at the border of the realms. The Fey remained unseen on their side of the border until the bride and groom held hands as they put their rings on each other. At that moment; the bride, high princess Adriena, had become visible along with the rest of her kinfolk and other attendees. The heir of Lirael , Prince Winchester Delacortez, was stunned. He truly loathed the Fey and he never agreed to this forced marriage, but when he looked upon Adriena's pale face he could not help himself from being lost in her deep blue eyes that were casting their spell upon him.
The wedding feast passed by in a blur, neither bride nor groom remembered much of the elaborate celebration. They danced to the bewitching music of the most talented Fey musicians and ate the most delectable dishes of both realms. Though there was much cheer there was also high tension. Nobody was fully confident in the treaty that was made that day. There was some hope though. Many humans were glad to see that their prince seemed to have interest in his wife. Winchester spent most of the night in silence, staring into his bride's large bottomless eyes. He was enchanted by her, he felt no love for her but he was strangely captivated by her. He felt as if he was held their against his own will. This theory was in a way true. Adriena felt his feelings and she knew he had none for her. She knew though that she had to keep up the act until they were alone for the sake of both realms. She tried her best to seem happy, but she felt so lost andalone inside. She wanted the celebrations to end soon.
The couple left their feast early. They were led to their wedding chamber; a large stone room with a huge fireplace and bed adorned with gold and ivory sheets. The walls were adorned with massive tapestries woven by the most gifted Fey. A fire was smoldering brilliantly in the hearth when the prince and his bride entered. Adriena broke eye contact with the prince, breaking the spell, and turned towards the fire. Winchester's head throbbed slightly as his wife withdrew her power over him. He immediately realized what Adriena had done and he turned towards her in a rage. He grabbed her shoulders and turned her around so that she faced him. He saw fear in her eyes and his rage melted as he laughed coldly at her and shoved her away. Adriena fell onto the cold stone floor, her skin turning red with anger and embarrassment. Winchester was sprawled across the bed when Adriena got up, steam coming of her skin in frustration.
"how dare you! Why haveyou been so cruel? My dear husband, I only cast my spell so that our people might have hope in our union. As your wife I am expected to be the mother of your children, you rightful heirs. It is a task expected of us," Adriena said as she kneeled beside the bed, her anger slowly disappearing. Winchester turned towards her and sneered, "I will not ever touch a foul thing like you. I never wanted you or any of this! Go ring the bell for the servant and when he comes tell him to fetch Charla. I have not seen my love in weeks. Oh and one more thing 'dear wife' your ring is enchanted to protect me if I feel threatened. It can not be taken off and I already have a few commands for it; you shall never touch me and you will in no way be able to harm me physically or through some sort of freakish enchantment. Now, run along and do my bidding."
Boiling tears streamed down Adriena's red face. The prince just laughed as she walked towards the door. She pulled the rope that signaled a servant. A young man quickly entered and Adriena told him her husband's request. She went to the window and stared down at the festivities, tears still streaming from her eyes. She could not leave the suite until the morning and she was at a loss of what to do. She did not want to witness her husband's shame. When Charla finally arrived, the prince promptly embraced her and steered her towards his bed. Adriena rose quickly from her place at the window and ran to the privy. She locked the door and called for her own servant and friend. Naya, a creamy skinned wood elf, quickly apparated at her mistress's side.
Adriena cried bitterly, her boiling tears steamed up the small room and poor Naya's skin turned bright pink from the heat. Life is hard for Fey gifted with flame and fire, their powers are hard to control and sometimes unpredictable; Adriena's fire powers were especially difficult to control. Adriena quickly ceased her sobbing and rushed to her servant's side. She cradled the small wood elf in her arms and set her down in a lustrous chair. Adriena began rubbing a healing salve onto Naya's burnt skin. The salve worked quickly, healing the burns and moustierizing the elf's skin. Adriena went into Naya's simple room, which was adjacent to Adriena's closet. There were two simple beds placed beside each other, separated by a short table with a lamp and several books upon it. Adriena lay down on the extra bed and soon fell into a deep yet troubled sleep.
