Just before the two of them had teleported, Nightmare could hear Shattered’s screeching. If you knew Shattered well enough, or maybe if you were just paying attention to it, you could hear the sad, frantic, pained emotions his screams were laced with. Nightmare cringed at this, feeling extremely guilty, whether it was his fault or not… He felt like it was. He should have tried his hardest to get out of Cross’s grasp.Cross landed somewhere, this time the place he had taken Nightmare wasn’t an empty void of sorts. There was grass and small, yellow flowers. A large forest was in the distance, just past the hillside. Nightmare noticed they were on top of a large hill, and beside the one in front of this one was a small village. He flinched, remembering his village and how he was always mistreated because of what he guarded and what he was made of, what he was created for.
“What’s wrong?” Cross grunted. He didn’t seem to care, though, he was just bothered by Nightmare’s flinch and the drop in his mood.
“N-Nothing, just, please don’t take me to that village…” Nightmare said. Cross set Nightmare down on his own two feet somewhat gently.
“That isn’t a problem. I wasn’t planning to, anyway, haha, I hate those petty humans with all of my soul,” he responded. He chuckled.
Tears clouded Nightmare’s vision and he felt shaky. He remembered what they did to him… He remembered lying to Dream, telling him that everything was alright… He remembered being called all those names, being told how useless he was, being told how pathetic he was… He remembered the friends he left behind… He hoped he could someday get back to them, but what would they say? Would they judge him?
What if hundreds of years had passed and Nightmare didn’t know it??
Dream could have been dead for a hundred years, and yet Nightmare never cared because he couldn’t remember the death of his own brother! He was shuddering now, holding himself.
“Whoa! Hey! Are you OK, um… boss??” Cross asked, coming to Nightmare’s side and hesitantly putting his hand on Nightmare’s left shoulder, the one facing away from Cross.
“I-I-I-- I’ve had really bad experiences with… with them…” Nightmare choked. He laughed glumly, rubbing the tears out of his eyes. Nightmare looked to Cross and immediately noticed his confusion that was hiding his concern. “Nothing much to worry about, just a couple of attacks…” Nightmare explained, noticing his confusion and curiosity. Nightmare made sure to give Cross a reassuring smile, hoping that would be enough and that he wouldn’t worry about Nightmare. They barely knew each other, afterall.
Cross nodded, not saying anything as he just sat there… He didn’t know what to do, but he feared that if he didn’t do something now Nightmare would kill him later for letting him be so depressed at this moment. Cross shuddered.
“So, when should I turn you back? Do you know how I could do that?” Cross asked. He REALLY hoped the smol bean knew what Cross was talking about.
Maybe, Cross hoped, if he turned him back to his formerly goopy self he would have his memories back as well. Kill two birds with one stone.
Nightmare looked to Cross, wiping the last of his tears out of his eye sockets. “What? What do you mean ‘turn me back’? Was I different before??” NIghtmare questioned. He was extremely puzzled, his expression mostly confusion, although worry was starting to creep on him… Maybe Cross was expecting more from him…
Cross let out an aggravated sigh. “Never mind, I’ll have to get your memory back and then you’ll remember about your octopussy self,” Cross replied.
“My what now?” Nightmare peeped. He shook his head and laughed a little, pretending that was a joke, although he knew that Cross was too serious at the moment to really be joking.
