Threstrals were bizarre creatures. One could only seem them if they had witnessed death. They were called bringers of death when in reality, they didn't do that at all. Lula walked to the castle grounds on the arm of George Weasley as he took to escorting her to these events in the stead of his dead twin. George and Lula found comfort in one another after the death of their beloved Fred.
George was there to help Lula through the birth of her Daughter, Fredrika Agnes Weasley. He had been there when she broke down, not knowing how she was going to have a baby on her own. He gave 50% of his stores profit to her, saying it was Fred's share and she would not have to work while she was pregnant. On his worst nights, her and Freddie came and kept him company and they told stories about Fred. They never would feel the loss of Fred in the same way, but they made damned sure he wasn't forgotten.
They had taken to being each others plus one at these events. Lula not wanting to be in another relationship and George being dutiful in making sure his Sister and Niece were taken care of in his Twin's place. Tonight, on the first year anniversary of the war, Lula's mother, Jeannette had agreed to watch Freddie while Lula went to the ball and recognition ceremony. Before the Ball, the war veterans were allowed to come on the grounds and pay their respects. Lula had caught the flying, skeletal horses in the air more than once and the way George kept looking over to the forest, he did too.
Lula hadn't been able to see them during her time at Hogwarts, her mother hadn't allowed her in the room when her father died, but after coming back from the Acromantula concentration camps, she had easily been able to see the winged bird that she flew on with Luna Lovegood to hex the giants. It had been a surprisingly easy feet as the older death eaters feared the horses.
George gave Lula's hand a comforting squeeze. Lula straightened her back and walked with grace and confidence onto the ground. She immediately was greeted by the sight of Draco Malfoy standing off in the corner. Draco and Lula had become close as she was a great comfort to the boy during his last couple of years at school. Often finding herself just sitting there in his company if he didn't want to or felt like he couldn't talk. She often took to telling him silly muggle tales that she called "Fairytales". They were ridiculous tales of some idiot girl always needed saving and some dashing hero came to save the day. He never really understood why she told them to him, but he appreciated her company more than he cared to admit. Especially after Lord Voldemort took over his house. He had been the one to alert Isobel of Lula's capture and the camp she was in. Isobel saved her but he heard that the damage done was irreversible and Lula developed Arachnophobia and had lost her grandmother in the camp.
Then during the battle, the father of her first child had died. He had been killed in the war with others and she found support from his twin brother. He had heard that She had a little girl which she named after the father. Draco smiled in her direction and came to greet her. George after the war was a lot more accepting of people in general. Having lost half of himself, he began to feel a helplessness he knew others had felt. Even Draco Malfoy. Seeing how good Draco was to Lula, he often found himself talking to the man and would consider themselves to be friends. They often got lunch together and talked about anything. Draco was even surprisingly good with Freddie. He was often seen these days at Lula's flat. His mother adored Freddie, with her Strawberry red hair and freckles. She always loved children and Lula's were no different, even if she was a muggle-born.
His father had left them after the war. He moved away and hid himself in shame. Leaving everything to Narcissa and Draco. Narcissa had agreed to watch Freddie one night on one of the worst nights Lula ever had after the war. She had sent a Patronus out and Draco had gotten it, he came right over and took her away from Britain after his mom agreed to watch the baby for the night and day while he helped her get back into a stable mental state. He was there for her like she was there for him.
Draco walked over to Lula and George.
"Hello George, Hello Lula." He greeted them both and they both returned the greetings. "Where is Freddie tonight?"
"Mom has her. Knew we would be coming here tonight and said she'd take her. She also sent an owl to your mom to invite her over for tea, so I imagine they're both doting on her quite a bit." She chuckled. He chuckled too. Before taking her arm from George.
"I see a Gibbons that needs an escort, George." He nodded his head towards Daffy, who stood off to the side with her sister and her date, Anthony Goldstein. George patted Lula's hand twice before she nodded and he walked off towards the oldest Gibbons sister.
Lula opened her mouth first as they watched him walk off.
"I never saw the Threstrals during that first lesson." She admitted to Draco.
"I did. By that time, Voldemort had already taken over my house and I had seen a couple of people killed by the killing curse." He was looking over at the forest too now, having had seen them earlier as well.
"I wasn't allowed to see my father when he died. But the-" She stopped and had to push back the flood of horrible memories. "The camp was full of death." She finally chocked out.
"You don't have to talk about it." He told her. "You're safe now."
"Maybe one day I'll be able to talk about it." She told him.
"And I'll be here to listen." He linked her arm through his and guided her away from the forest. "Come on, we've a lot of people to greet and I'm pretty sure Bat-girl-" Lula elbowed him. "Ginny" he corrected himself. "Ginny is looking forward to seeing you."
With that, she pushed those thoughts aside and went to greet the other War Veterans.
