As you can assume, my birthday was quite boring and ordinary. I went to dinner with Olivia and let her fill me in with all the gossip and who was flirting with whom and who she thought liked her. Honestly I could care less. Other things occupy my mind such as fingerling about The Flash, Friends, Gilmore Girls, and Sabrina, amongst other things. To be honest, Burn from Hamilton is currently playing nonstop in my head. Olivia is obviously more social than I'll ever be. I'm that 89 year old grandma who doesn't even have an Instagram account. How weird am I? I've never understood the need to constantly show off and be on my phone 24/7. But I mean, you be you, right?
Anyway, after dinner and ice cream I drove home to find my mom waiting for me at the door with a large sack overflowing with tissue paper wrapped in her arms. Obviously she was excited about something. I took the package from her and hastily tore out the tissue paper. What did I find? Another sack. After this continued for some time, I came across a small box meticulously wrapped in gold and silver wrapping paper.
"You really wanted me to work for this, huh" I groaned.
With an encouraging smile, she waved at me to open the box. Anxiously I opened it to find a small piece of paper. Once I looked closer I realized it was a cut out from a magazine--the Crested Butte Newspaper.
"What is this?" "What does this mean?" I asked, flipping over the cut out and examine it for any indication or hint.
"Well, Emma, I applied for the pharmacist job--and I got it!" she exclaimed. "I figured moving there would be a cool present and we need to cut back on expenses now. But go open the door to the bathroom really quickly."
Nervously I turned the knob to the bathroom. Two pairs of happy eyes matched with two wagging tails, topped with two half eaten pink and red bows greeted me. I couldn't help but smile ear to ear as I embraced the two sausage-looking white-lab furballs. As I stood in shock, my two new best friends kissed my on my face and ears and I suddenly understood the feeling that all moms talk about after they meet their newborn baby for the first time. At that moment, I knew my life had changed forever.
That night I did not sleep as my excitement and joy prohibited it and the fact that we are moving slipped away from my mind.
