Because I Am A Girl... by ErigizzyE13

1) Because I am a girl...

A child born after hours of labour and pain

A miraculous gift, the world's gain

I am no different than my brothers before me

Yet my father sighs as he lays his sight on me

Another girl after all this bother

He says accusingly to my bleeding mother

All because I am a girl.

2) Because I am a girl...

A few months into life yet deemed unworthy and impure

My parents tell me, "This is how you'll make a good wife"

Voiceless I remain as they cut and sow me with a common kitchen knife

My mother holds me down as I look into her eyes

But how can I blame her, she was once a girl too

She once looked into her mother's eyes and she felt the way I do

All because I am a girl.

3) Because I am a girl...

Time for school and all the boys run as carefree as one can be

I'll receive an education too, different as it may be

As they learn in class how to conquer tomorrow

I'm given a crash course to a woman's sorrow

All because I am a girl.

4) Because I am a girl...

Purposeless but for one thing

The tears streaming down my face could not stop the wedding

I look at my parents and all of my siblings

I plead with them to stop this madness but all they do is offer blessings.

All because I am a girl.

5) Because I am a girl...

I've learned that mine is an ugly fate

Nothing but a common livestock sent off to mate

For I am a child bearing a child

And he is a beast that doesn't live in the wild

Nothing but a heartless man who would take a child to get a child

All because I am a girl.

6) Because I am a girl... and not yet a woman

They told me what they thought I should be and not what I could be

They held me down by my arms and by my feet

They feared what I would become if I were let free.

All because I am a girl.

7) But because I am a girl and I will be a woman

Breaking the society's chains and barriers

A beacon of light, empowerment warrior

Out for justice for the rights they deprive

This is just the beginning I am yet to thrive

Yes, because I am a girl.
