Making the Most of Life's Moments
P.S. Spoilers for The Day of the Doctor (50th Anniversary Special) if you haven't already seen it!
The Doctor's POV
I woke up the next morning. Yes, for the first time in forever, I actually got some sleep! Even though it was only about fifteen minutes worth. Do you know how hard it is to sleep? I simply can't stay still, but for River last night, I did.
After getting up from my power nap, I took a shower. Being in there somehow made me think of all the things going on at the moment. River's near death experience, River's parents' close divorce. When I pondered over it, River was going through a lot lately. I already knew that, but somehow it became clearer to realize.
Energized and full of new thoughts about my wife's feelings, I skipped to the kitchen. It was one of the first times I'd been happy in a long time, especially since after the Time War. I sighed to myself. The Time War. A part of me wanted to remember it for all who had died, yet another part of me wanted to forget everything about it, including my mistake. The biggest mistake of my life.
At the time, I supposed that I would somehow be better off saving everyone by killing them. I was selfish, and it showed in my youthful decisions. By escaping with the Moment, I thought I'd be the hero, do what was best for the planet. Turned out I was wrong.
Not only did my intentions fail, but I also killed the rest of my species. I often complained about how I was the last of my kind. Funny thing, it's actually my fault. I didn't want to live after the decision I'd made. And that was exactly why my existence continued.
I brought myself back to the present moment of happiness. There was no point in worrying about what was already done. I smiled when I spotted River sitting on the farthest side of the table. She was so beautiful, sitting there with her morning hair and pajamas. No one could make me happier.
Amy and Rory were also seated at the table; I noticed them as I took my own seat. They seemed quiet. Not in a bad way, but in a good way. Conversation was flowing between the two, and I was glad to see smiles on their faces.
"Hello, sweetie!" River greeted me, stifling a yawn. "How are you this morning, Mrs. Song?" I grinned. My wife punched me playfully. "Hungry, but overall well. Thanks for asking." It was polite and also thoughtful to ask River such things. I really have picked up a few marriage tips here and there (no counseling involved!)
I turned to face my in-laws. It was nice, hearing the sound of laughter instead of shouting. "Could you pass the butter, please?" Rory asked the woman sitting next to him. Why he needed Amy to pass the butter when they were sitting side by side, I never would figure out. Either way, Amy teased, "What's the magic word?"
Everything started as a calm and normal morning. It stayed that way until halfway through breakfast. In other words, not for long.
As I chewed on my last strip of bacon, Amy cleared her throat. "We have an announcement to make." Rory added. The couple stayed silent like the rest of us for a prolonged amount of seconds. Finally, Amy turned to her husband.
"Well?" she prompted. The Last Centurion simply stared. "What?" he wondered aloud. Amy laughed as she told him, "I thought you were going to tell them." Rory nodded. "I was going to let you do the honors." he said to Amy softly. She smiled.
"Well, then. Doctor, River. I'd just like to tell you that Rory and I are getting along nicely, as you can see. We have also decided not to get a divorce." Amy paused for a moment to gather her thoughts and transform them into words. "Our marriage isn't completely broken, and we figured we can work things out."
River and I glanced at each other. Smiles spread across our faces, we congratulated Rory and Amy. I was glad they were able to solve their problems. Everyone spent the rest of the day relaxing around the TARDIS. Amy and Rory stayed in the living room and kitchen for the most part. I had something special for River.
It wasn't exactly the kind of present that was really big in size or value. There's nice people in this world, and sometimes those nice people do really nice things. It may not be the most extreme, but it means a lot in terms of the heart. That's what I was doing with River. I wanted to take this limited time in both of our lives and use it to the best of my abilities. Not a single moment would be wasted.
I told her to meet me in the library after lunch. When River arrived, I smiled, and motioned for her to sit down beside me. She smiled back slyly. It seemed like everyone was doing a lot of smiling today. It was almost becoming strange.
"What's this all about?" River inquired. She was a smart woman, and it wasn't often she questioned me. So I decided to soothe her curiosity with a small response. Well, it was small in my opinion. "Because of our ever changing timelines, it's hard to strengthen and maintain our friendship. I know that sounds sort of humanly, but I'm being serious, which I almost never am." I sighed. "In other words, I think we should make the most of this time and learn more about each other. Without spoilers, of course."
River winked at me after that last line. "Obviously," she added. We stared deeply into each other's eyes until River broke the silence. "What are we waiting for?" she asked me. I raised my eyebrows. "What?" River only repeated her question. "What are we waiting for? I'm excited to see how your plan will play out." she added.
I nodded, then blushed. My cheeks and entire face turned crimson. River noticed this and brought it up. "It's hot in this room," I lied. Like the woman she was, River caught my dishonest act. "What are you all red about?" she wondered with a giggle. River loved seeing me in a fluster.
I cleared my throat before responding. "Well, I wanted to do something before we started." River kept quiet, prompting me to speak again. "May I kiss you, River Song?"
As well as looking extremely surprised, River said, "Of course, my love. Kiss away." I could tell by her facial expression that she was very proud and happy at the moment. As much as River loved to initiate a kiss, she wanted to be kissed just as much in return. It was something I was beginning to learn after nine hundred years.
~~~ 3rd POV ~~~
The couple's lips met. Time seemed to stop, as time did in such moments. No one could love each other more than the two Timelords, it was decided. Their story was a story worth telling. The greatest story ever told. It continued from one day to the next and wouldn't end until death separated the two. Even then, nothing would completely isolate River and the Doctor from each other. Their love would remain forever infinite, just as love should.
