Nimblekit yawned. He heard voices around him as he sniffed for his mother's milk, searching for food. The cool morning air smelled fresh in his mouth, and he crawled over to where he could sense his mother.
"Good morning, you three," the calm voice of Appletail cooed. Nimblekit heard his siblings' mews in response, and decided to say good morning too.
"Good morning, Mama!" He said. He was 2 weeks old, so he'd soon be opening his eyes. But he didn't want to wait; Nimblekit wanted to open his eyes first!
Squinting his eyes and trying to peel them open, he heard snorts of laughter from an older kit. "Are you trying to open your eyes, Nimblekit?!" Teased Gorsekit.
Nimblekit heard a sharp retort from Gorsekit's mother, Jaggedfur, who said, "Watch your mouth, young kit. I remember a certain someone who did the exact same thing..."
Gorsekit made a 'humph' noise, and If Nimblekit could have glared at him, he sure would. Instead he continued to pry open his eyes. I gotta beat Wolfkit and Breezekit!
Finally, after a long continuous cycle of trial and error, he opened his eyes for the very first time. At first, he wailed at the sight of light and closed his eyes right back up so he could open them slower. As he peeked out, Nimblekit saw horse surrounding the den (though he could not identify it, he assumed it was gorse because it didn't look friendly like Gorsekit) and a stone wall on one of the sides. He saw the opening, where it was so bright. Nimblekit also saw the cats of the nursery. His sister, Breezekit, was a pretty pale silver tabby and Wolfkit, his brother, had a long haired dark gray pelt hinted with red in it. His mother had a gray tabby pelt too, and Jaggedfur had messy black fur and amber eyes. Gorsekit had a black and white pelt, while his brother Falconkit had a brown tabby pelt. Another cat, Leafwind, was a calico cat, and her daughter, Snowkit, had a fluffy white pelt like snow (though he didn't know what snow was at the time). She was born a moon before Nimblekit, and couldn't stop himself from admiring her pelt. It rose and fell gently, like a feather, unknowing of the rowdy kits already awake. Nimblekit was jerked back to reality when his mother spoke.
"Ah, you've opened your eyes! What a wonderful day!" Her loving green gaze bore into Nimblekit and he glanced at his paws shyly.
"Have Breezekit and Wolfkit opened their eyes yet?" He asked nervously.
His mother purred in reply, saying, "No, dear. You are the first."
Nimblekit stood proudly as he gazed down at his siblings. He was the FIRST! He beat them! HA!
Just then, Breezekit said, "I know you think your better!" And opened her eyes startlingly, icy blue as all kits were, and blasted off towards Nimblekit, nocking him flat off his weak paws.
"AAAAAAGHHHH!!!" Nimblekit yelled. "MOM HELP ME!!" But Appletail just purred and watched her kits play.
After a few minutes of playing chase on stubby legs that could only move so fast, Nimblekit and Breezekit asked to go outside. "Wait for your brother, you 2," Appletail told them.
"But he's taking so long!" Breezekit complained.
Wolfkit twitched his ear. "Just cause I can't see doesn't mean I can't hear you, Breezekit," Wolfkit said.
Sometime later, Wolfkit finally opened his eyes. "Can we see the camp now mom?" Breezekit and Nimblekit pleaded. "Pleeeaaase?"
Appletail replied with, "Alright."
"Yay!" They all excitedly mewed. So they set off to the entrance, the kits riding on their mother's back since they were too young to walk a lot.
Nimblekit stared in awe as they started through camp. It was so... big! There were cats everywhere, in and out of what appeared to be the camp entrance, eating prey, grooming each other, and training. It was so busy, but yet it had a comforting aura to it. It felt... safe. Yes, Nimblekit thought. Safe.
Nimblekit gripped his mother's back tightly with his sharp, tiny claws as his mother strode through camp. "Here," she strode over to a den right next to the nursery, "is the elder's den. This is where the cats who have served their clan for many seasons go to stay and rest for the remainder of their lives."
Nimblekit could remember them for sure. Every night, he was unable to dream anything other than listening to the s'mores of elders."Why don't they want to be warriors anymore, Mama?" Breezekit said questioningly.
Appletail grinned. "Because, they're too old. They can't run as easily— kind of like you," she said, laughing. She then walked across camp to a tunnel-like den covered in brambles. "This is the medicine den."
The smell of herbs drifted out of the den. A young, sleek looking golden, long haired cat walked out. "Ah, hello little ones," he said as he strode over to them, smiling warmly, orang eyes like crystals glowing. "I am your uncle, Amberfur."
"Hi!" Nimblekit squeaked. "I like your den!"
"Hello, Uncle!" Breezekit said exitedly. "What's an uncle?"
"Your fur smelles good," Wolfkit said.
Appletail ribbed her muzzle against her littermate's. "It's good to see you, Amberfur. Have you seen Quailfoot? He has yet to see the kits with their eyes open," she asked.
Amberfur smirked. "You and Quailfoot," he said. "Such lovebirds! Anyways, I did hear he was on hunting patrol early this morning, at dawn time. Should be here soon."
"Can we finish our ride now?" Nimblekit begged.
"Fine," Appletail said. "Bye Amberfur!"
"Later Appletail!"
