Song Momoko is the eighth member of WAYV, the Chinese sub-unit of NCT under V Label. In 2017, SM Entertainment recruiters traveled to Shanghai Theatre Academy to watch dance students practice for their upcoming performance. They were amazed by visuals and her talent in dancing, so they offered her an opportunity to train to become a KPOP idol.
At first, Momoko declined the opportunity to train under SM Entertainment because she was already attending a prestigious performing arts school, which was her dream since she learned to dance. The same SM recruiter continuously visited her dance practices the following year and persuading her to visit SM Entertainment in Seoul. Finally frustrated with the disruption, she agreed to visit Korea during her holiday break to make her final decision about training to becoming a Korean idol.
When she finally visited SM Entertainment, she was introduced to a different aspect of performing arts and immediately fell in love with the duality of KPOP. Throughout her visit, she witnessed trainees passionately striving for debut and idols diligently practicing for comebacks, which inspired Momoko to improve in dancing. Especially, after she saw several SM trainees and idols her age effortlessly portray raw emotions with powerful and meaningful movements. With the support of her parents, she withdrew from Shanghai Theatre Academy and trained under SM Entertainment for one year to debut.
One year after intensive training and confusing Korean lessons, SM Entertainment decided to debut Momoko under Label V as a solo artist in China because she was not improving in Korean. Although she was promised a solo career, SM Entertainment abandoned the idea and decided to debut her with WAYV because she fit the group image and allowed the opportunity to branch into the Japanese industry.
In the beginning, WAYV was opposed the idea of debuting as a coed group because of the harsh criticism they will each face in the Chinese music industry, especially Momoko. When her teasers were leaked, many Chinese and international fans were excited for debut of a female WAYV member. The positive reaction of fans, allowed each member to excitedly await their debut as a coed idol group in China. Eventually, Momoko was able to become a loving sister, mentor, and idol at age twenty-one.
