We both went into the woods and I showed Chole which branches are good to use as firewood.
“I don’t understand why you are so picky about some damn wood. I mean come on even if it’s wet or whatever it’s still going to burn.”
“What you don’t understand Chole is that in order to have a comfy AND warm fire you need just the right kind of wood.”
“Oh I get it! Its like make-up you have to have just the right shade of eye shadow in order for your outfit to look just right.”
“Yea I guess you’re ri-.”
“Or just the right shoes can make you look adorable or sexy…..”
After that all I heard was blah blah blah blahdy blah blah blah. I can’t believe that the only way that Chole understands things is if it relates to some form of fashion be-it make-up, shoes or clothes. Half the time I just pretend I’m listening and begin to zone out.
After a few trips between the camp and the woods we collected a good amount of wood for the night. I started the fire and began to set out the marshmallows and the rest of the things we needed for s’mores.
I was relived because I was beginning to think that Chole had forgotten about me having to tell her about the incident, but just as I was thinking that she asked,
“So when are you going to tell me?”
I guess I’d thought to soon.
“What are you talking about?” I asked her acting innocently dumbstruck. “I think the right way to phrase the question is ‘So when are they going to be ready?’ Sometimes you just aren’t normal Chole.”
“Oh come on I’m not talking about the s’mores don’t play stupid you know exactly what I’m talking ‘bout.”
I just looked at Chole with a look between amusement and disbelief but she read it as me holding out on her which I kind of was.
“You promised you’d tell me about why you freaked out in the car earlier today.”
“OH!” I exclaimed, “You’re talking about that incident.”
“Yea I’m talking about that one which other one do you think I’m talking ‘bout?”
“Oh it was nothing much I just had a bad dream.” I waved if off as if it was nothing because I didn’t want Chole to get freaked out.
“Janet you’re lying to me I know there’s something more.”
“Nooooooo there isn’t.” I tried to act nonchalant but I was really worried that she wouldn’t buy it and continue to pick at me over the same subject. In all honesty I just wanted to go home back to my boring old life that was completely predictable; my adventurous spirit had fled by now because of the nightmare I had.
“I don’t believe you.”
My wish of Chole dropping it had not come true after all I guess fairy godmothers really don’t exist.
“Ugh, what do want to know.” I just gave in because I knew Chole and the only way to get her off my back is giving her what she wants.
“Everything duh.”
“Fine so it all started…….”
