I remember it all. As if it was only yesterday. I can still see his dark eyes piercing into my soul, His black hair shining under the moonlight. I still can't believe he's gone. It's been 200 years now, since his death, and I still cry sometimes. He was the only man to ever own my heart. Forgive me, I'm getting ahead of myself. I know you are wondering how it was 200 years ago. I will answer everything, I just have to go back to the beginning.
The year was 1815, I was 20 years old, and unmarried, which in that time was almost unheard of. People in the village thought all kinds of things. Like maybe I was a witch, or was crazy, all kinds of things. Truth was, I wanted to marry for love, not out of need, or because it was the way things were. Plus, my mother had died giving birth to me, so for my whole life it was just my father and I. I had often asked him why he never remarried. He always said there were two reasons. Number one, my mother had been the love of his life and he had never met anyone who made him feel the way she did. And number two, no one would ever love me as my mother would have. Too many stories of horrible step-mothers treating their step-children like a burden. So, he stayed single until I was grown. And now that I'm grown, he said he just can't let go of the memory of my mother. My father was a kind man, everyone loved him. He was a blacksmith, best in town everyone would say. So we weren't poor, but not wealthy either. We lived a comfortable life. But father was getting on in age, and couldn't work like he used to. So he took on an apprentice to ease the workload. He was a handsome young man, and very kind. Father kept pushing me to marry him, worrying about me when he was gone. I kept telling him I would be just fine without a husband. I kept telling him I didn't want to marry just anyone. So, he left the subject alone. One day the apprentice was sick, and father needed to deliver some items to the next town over. As I said, he was getting on in age, so I told him I would do it. I had often made this trip when father was busy, or ill. He didn't like it, but sometimes had no choice. Plus he had taught me how to use a gun, so I knew how to protect myself. I had never had any trouble on this trip, and expected this one to be the same. He loaded up the wagon, and I told him not to worry, I would be home by the next morning. But for some reason, he seemed more worried than usual. We had heard stories of bandits now attacking people on the roads. From the sound of it, they were getting closer to us. I showed him my gun, and reminded him that he had taught me how to protect myself. I gave him a hug, and kiss on the cheek and set off. It was a beautiful day. Summer was coming to an end and the fall winds were moving in. The journey was a beautiful one. The open countryside, the smell of flowers and trees all around. But it could get quite boring. I had been on the road for a while now, and the sun was starting to set. I stopped the horses and lit the lanterns around the wagon. That's when I noticed it. A huge raven had been following me ever since I had come into the woods. It sat silently on a fallen tree. Its black eyes watching me. It never made a sound, just the flapping of its large wings as I got back onto the wagon, and pushed the horses forward. I had made this trip so many times, and had never felt uneasy. But this time I had a feeling that something was going to happen. I put my gun across my lap, loaded and ready to go. The horses started acting jumpy, so I looked around to see what was making them nervous. The raven that had been following us landed on a branch right next to the wagon and started to make a loud caw. I was surprised as the bird had never made a sound this whole way. But now it was flapping its wings, screaming as loud as it could. I stopped the horses, and looked around. I could feel something, or someone watching me. I gripped the gun even tighter in my hand, ready to fire. The raven kept yelling as loud as it could, the horses were afraid of something, but what? I heard something moving in the trees, and before I could react, I felt someone land on me. Then everything went black.
