!!!Warning Start!!!
Later on in the chapter a nervous picking tick is mentioned. It is implied to be used to alleviate anxiety.

Alphys is basically a big ole bundle of nerves.

Also, some self-hatred implied. Represents the aftermath of homelessness.

!!!Warning Finish!!!

Alphys’ eyes glowed from the light beaming in front of her. The origins of this source of light were less than savoury, causing Alphys to crinkle her nose as the particular burning scents filled her nostrils. However, it provided warmth, and a strange comfort as she watched the flames crackle in front of her. Even if they were originating from a trash can.

When Alphys first ended up on the streets, she told herself she would get back into a real home soon. Every night she would scratch a line into the wall, as a reminder of how long she'd been there, a push to get her off the streets and back into the apartments.

She ended up moving to a different dead-end alley after watching the scratch marks in the wall turn into an eroded disaster that ended up spreading to the walls adjacent to them.

Alphys let her attention drift back to the burning trash can, and basked in the comforting warmth it provided. It reminded her of fond childhood memories of being buried in warm sand. A part of her longed to return to the simplicity of those times.

But the trash can's comfort could only last so long. Flashing lights flickered into the alleyway, a siren ominously beginning in the distance. Alphys quickly smothered the glowing can, and ducked behind it. The warmth radiated into her back, as the siren grew closer, the flickering red and blue lights growing brighter as they neared.

A single glowing ember floated into the air above the warm can. Alphys watched it carefully, as it floated down once more, landing peacefully on her spectacles.

Her tranquillity broke, as a large magical spear impaled the ground next to her. It crackled with hidden power, the ground around it splitting apart, acting similarly to shards of glass.

“NYAHHHH!” the loud voice startled Alphys out her analytical study of the magical might. Something leapt above her head, making Alphys flinch back into the trash can. The figure in front of her turned, half of their face lighting up underneath the pale moonlight. “You there! Are you a monster or a human?!”

‘Oh no she's hot.’ Alphys thought numbly, her cheeks flushed red hot as she realised who was standing in front of her.

Undyne, the local police officer...

Was staring right at her!

“I will not ask again!” Undyne barked, lips pulling back to reveal sharp teeth. Alphys squeaked, ducking her head in fear.

“S-sorry!” she sputtered, reaching one claw up to readjust her glasses. “I-I didn't mean to not a-answer y-y-yo-” Alphys paused, realising that Undyne had gotten even closer, reaching towards her spear. “MONSTER! I'm a m-monster!” she finally jabbered, sweating profusely. Undyne paused, before swiping her hand and dispelling the spear.

Silence fell between the two of them, before Undyne broke into a massive toothy grin. “Fantastic! Why didn’t you just say so!?” she shook her head, still grinning wildly. “Honestly I just wanted to make sure Kris hadn't run off again. They're an… Interesting child.”

Alphys's eyes lit up. “Y-you know Kris too?!” she squawked, tapping her claws on her sides nervously, arms folded in a knot. “I-I kn-know how you feel,” she let herself smile a little, “I'm the local senior class teacher, Miss Alphys.” she decided not to mention anything else about herself henceforth. After all, she wasn't anything special.
