A Hatchback car pulls up on a dirt road with an old rickety house on the other side. "Are you sure you want to live here, Rose"? A pale young women said in the drivers seat, with a plaid shirt with long ripped up faded jeans, with light makeup on,and a bright red purse. "Yes mom I'm sure". Rose said with a monotoned voice. "Anything to get out of your house". Rose mentioned under her breath.
The house was made of a very dark wood. It was very tall and looked like no one had been in it for years. The porch swing looked very unstable,it looked like if a chihuahua would have sat on it,it would collapse. The very top of the roof of the old house was pointy and ragged. Rose got out of the red Hatchback and opened the trunk.
She got her luggage out and rolled it onto the porch. When she stepped on the stairs it felt like it was gonna collapse beneath her. She got 2 suitcases onto the porch and had to go get 2 more. Her mom was still sitting in the drivers seat texting on her Android phone. Rose rolled her eyes. Probably texting another dude. Rose thought. Why can't she get out and help me for once. Rose's thoughts were interrupted when she spotted a black cat. It had glowing hazel eyes and was looking straight at her. The black cat stood out like a sore thumb in the daylight.
Rose struggled to get the last 2 suitcases onto the porch. All of a sudden a big blow of wind almost knocked her down. She tripped but luckily the railing on the steps caught her. Thanks for helping, mom. Rose took out her IPhone 8 she got for her 17th birthday and looked at the text from the seller. The key should be in the mailbox
Sincerely,Ethena Davis
Rose passed by the car to get to the mailbox. The cat was long gone by now. She opened the mailbox and got the key. Rose looked at her mother, whom was smiling at her phone. Rose shrugged her shoulders and rolled her eyes while walking to the front door of the rickety house. She inserted the key and turned it. The door creaked as it opened. The first thing Rose saw was the big staircase leading up to the 2nd floor. She looked back at her mother who was still glued to her phone.
Rose walked to the car and opened the door. Her mom flinched as she looked up at Rose. Her mom's short brunette hair was stirring in the wind. "So,Roe,how do you like it"? Her mom asked. Roe was her nickname. "Yes mom,I like it". Rose said with annoyance in her voice. "*sigh* ok". Rose's mom sighed. She slowly drove off. This was Rose's first taste of independence.
Her mom always treated her like she was a baby, when she was 6 her dad left which threw her mom into deep depression. She started to drink a lot and go on dating apps, she constantly went on a bunch of dates. When Rose's dad left when she was 6,her mom kept treating her like she was 6 even though she was far from being a 6 year old. The house they lived in was a mess. Dishes, junk, food, toys, and anything you could imagine would be on the floor, tables, couches, beds, window sills, anything!
She was always self-conscious about inviting friends over. Also in that point of time Rose was being called the 'robot girl' or the 'weird girl' in school. She lost all her friends because of that and lost one of her best friends because of sabotage.
Rose grew an ice cold personality just so she wouldn't make friends just to get her heart broken again.
Rose unpacked her stuff on the couch and coffee table. She decided to explore the house to see where everything was. The kitchen was a mess,it has mold and rust where the faucet was,the fridge and freezer were super dirty. The cabinets were about to fall of and all the left over dishes were covered in dust.
Ethena really didn't take good care of this place. Rose thought as she walked into the room connected to it. It looked like a laundry room. Again, the washer and dryer were really dusty. A door was in the laundry room that led outside. Leaves and twigs were everywhere. There was even a little pool that was filled with leaves, twigs, and drowned bugs.
She walked out into the living room again. Past the staircase was a long hallway. She walked down it and saw a dead rat lying in the middle of the floor. It's gray fur was sticking up and it had a surprised look on its face. Weird. Thought Rose. She stepped over the deceased rat and kept on walking. Before the first door there was a portrait of someone,Rose assumed it was one of the first owners of the house.
She heard her phone vibrate and lifted it up from her back pocket.
Hi! I hope your house is good enough for you to live in,if not, you're welcome to move back in with me, sweetie.
Love,Your mom
P.S   A package from your grandma should be on its way, Rosarialonaexlevette
"Ugh"! Rose screeched. Why did mom name me that?! It's so stupid! Everyone called her Rose because everyone thought it was her actual name. She put 'Rose' on all of her papers at school, making her teachers thinking it was just a weird mishap. People called her Roe for short, not even knowing 'Rose' was short for her real name.
She kept on exploring the house. There was 1 master bedroom and 3 guest rooms. There also was 2 bathrooms. It was time she went upstairs. The steps creaked every time Rose stepped on one. A door was to her left at the top of the staircase. She opened it. It looked like an office. Great! Rose thought. Somewhere to do my work. She turned to the hallway of doors. The end of the hallway was a dead end, only doors on the side. Some rooms just had random stuff in it and the 2nd to last door was a library. The last door was a nice bedroom with a balcony with a not so nice view. All the view she had was the little backyard and the tall trees as a barrier.
After almost 24 hours of being in the house, she got the package from her grandmother,it read
Hello dear!
It's been a long time since I've spoke to you Rosarialonaexlevette,so how are you doing these days? Your mom tells me that you're getting back into music. Which instrument or instruments are you playing?I would love to know! It's been lonely up here in Maine ever since you, your mother, and father left. I'm managing though, your aunt Margie is taking good care of me. Anyways I sent you some stuff from Maine, hope you enjoy!
Love,Grandma
Rose took the wrapping paper out of the box, inside the box was a mug,a T-shirt,a plate, and a cute little cat plushie. I'm too old for stuffed animals. She took the stuff and put it in her master bedroom. She also had a clock and plugged it and her phone charger in the outlet next to the night stand.
She went to sleep at around 10:20pm and she woke up at 2:00am. She went out of the house for a walk. She needed some fresh air so Rose decided to take a walk around the block. She was at the 3rd house down when she saw the black cat again. She had a feeling that it was the same black cat. It had its glowing hazel eyes against the black sky, barely lit up by the moonlight. The black cat followed her all the way around the block.
When she got back to the house she looked back at the cat and it was just sitting in the sidewalk looking at her. She entered her house and ate some beef jerky she brought with her. She fell asleep on the couch with the beef jerky bag still in her hand. Rose woke up around 9:30am. She looked outside the big windows across from the couch to see a long black tail. It looked like the black cat's tail.
Rose opened the door and the black cat was sitting on her porch and looked up at her from where it was sitting. She kneeled down and looked at it with the beef jerky bag still in her hands. The cat smelled like the woods and dirt. It had some specks of dirt on it's fur. "Now,are you a boy or a girl"? Rose said to the skinny little creature. The cat meowed while staring with bug eyes at the beef jerky. Rose took a little piece of beef jerky and put it on the floor of the porch right in front of the cat.
The black cat sniffed it and ate it in 1 chomp. Rose put 1 more piece of beef jerky on the ground for the cat before going inside. She got her instruments out a picked the guitar to play on the street. This was the only way to get people to listen to her music. She got a low height cardboard box and a sign for people to put money in. She headed out to a street corner where it was pretty populated. She started to play and when she was done with a few of her songs, she had gotten $12.08.
She was pretty happy with that amount and turned to go back home. She was gonna hire some people to renovate the house and yard. She hired 10 people who had pretty good ratings to help her fix the house. She felt her phone vibrate in her pocket and lifted it up. It was a phone call from her mother. She answered it. "Hello"? Rose said. "Hello sweetie! I heard you want someone to help renovate the house,I can help if you'd like." Her mom said in a happy tone. "I've already hired a few people,I have it handled". Rose announced. "But,you know how good I am at styling houses and picking out good furniture"! Rose's mom protested. "Mom,please." Rose didn't want her mom coming over. They were already on bad terms as it is. "But honey-" Rose's mom tried to argue. Rose hung up before the conversation carried out any longer.
