The click of the door opening pulled me from the darkness announcing Leah's arrival in my pain hazed brain though I couldn't muster the energy yet to open my eyes. I was trying to pull away the focus from the pain in my shoulder as I forced all my strength on prying my lids open finally managing to lift them into slits to see the small red-headed woman with her hands on her hips. She raised her brows over flashing green eyes and shook her head. It was moments like these that I understood why John had fallen for her. Only she could match his temper and loyalty to the club...Only she could be our queen, reigning in a way that was both tough and motherly.

"What the hell were you thinking?" She asked, berating me while I bled out on my couch. Her face was red as she bared her teeth. She leaned down and pulled my hand away from my shoulder, glancing at the wound as she shook her head, "Your mother is going to have your ass for that one."

"I wasn't thinking obviously," I said through gritted teeth as my mind drifted to my mother in Florida. I saw her once a year but if she heard I was hurt, she would call and the verbal assault that followed would feel as though I were an eight-year-old boy getting a strapping behind the woodshed. I pushed the thoughts of my mother away as I tried to ignore the sweat dripping into my eyes.

She grinned flashing straight white teeth, her features twisting with a sick amusement that reminded me of her husband, "Well, you'll pay for that, Darlin'," she scoffed and then, threw up her hands, "This is going to hurt like a bitch."

"You're not taking him to the hospital?" Abby asked, her voice small but it still broke through the pain to gain my attention. I moved my gaze to her and frowned at her face pale with what I could only describe as worry and damn if it didn't make the pain fade enough that it was bearable.

Leah tilted her head while she studied Abby, her fierce expression fading to the same gentleness she had when speaking to her daughters or the women at the club, "No, Doll," she said softer than I had ever heard her speak, "But our doctor is coming to help him. I promise he'll be fine."

Abby blinked, her eyes darkening as she glanced at my shoulder before turning back to Leah, "But-"

"It's okay, Abby," I gritted out wanting to wipe the worry from her pretty face, "I've done this before. Doc will fix me up and I'll be no worse for wear in a few days."

Her eyes widened as she turned back to me. She sucked in a breath, causing it to hiss between her teeth, "You've been shot before?"

Leah shook her head, glancing from me to Abby, her eyes darkening in confusion. Her lips parted to say something, but a knock sounded at the door interrupting her. She rubbed her hand over the back of her neck and went to answer it. Abby's eyes were getting wider by the second and tears had settled into them. She twisted a little gold locket at the base of her throat, rubbing it as if it would magically give her comfort. For a moment, I wondered if it was important to her.
