Mysterious Me

CHAPTER 3

          My ASL teacher, Mrs. Morgan strides into our, tossing a skittish glance in my direction before placing her things on her her desk and directing her attention towards the class but not anyone in particular. Why is she acting so strangely?

          She clears her throat before speaking, "Okay, class. You will be assigned a project in which you will teach a student whom lacks sign language skills..", her hands move quickly as she signs for the few deaf students in the class. Is she actually serious right now? Where are the cameras? My eyes bore harshly into her own. Ahe continues, " You partners have been assigned to you by myself so that you cannot cheat on this project." Sighs.

          "Are you actually serious?" I mutter low enough that no one hears me. My teacher's gaze suddenly snaps to me as if she heard me. A small, confused frown appear a on her face a millisecond before she gives a megawatt smile with a mischievous glint in her eye. She starts to yell out partners to the class. Most are disappointed because they get complete strangers.

          "Dani...Jace Waters." she speaks quietly and I swear on candy corn I saw red for a split second. She knows I don't like him; howevwr, she doesn't know why. She has caught some of our minor things such as flinching automatically when he looks as me with a look that could kill. She pulled me aside one day last year and asked if I had done anything to him and when I shook my head frantically, she believed me almost instantly. Mrs. Morgan tries to keep me away from him as much as possible but she isn't around a lot. I feel am utter betrayal wash over me, shadowed by what I could only describe as immense sadness. Why me? And to make matters worse, the girls in my class are all glaring at me with are thing anger as if I chose the one person that they all wanted to be partners with and I didn't didn't.

          ¿Por qué? What did I do to deserve this? My teacher must have seen the emotions swirling in my eyes and hastily pull a me outside of the class room while telling the others to practice with a partner.

          She sighs through her nose, "I'm sorry, but no one els3 would be able to get their work done with him as their partner. I know that you will take this seriously. You known I would never do anything like this unless I had no other choice. He had actually requested that you teach him of all the students bit left the reason section blank. Maybe he wants to make amends with you? I don't know..again, I apologize for this. If you need anything else you can always come to me." she finishes her little speech with sad, weary eyes. I could tell how stressful this actually was for her too. I nodded my head silently and head back into the class before her. They end up doing a partner activity that helps improve signing fluidity while I lie my head on my desk contemplating all of this. Especially the part where he requested me. Why would he do that?
