A Dangerous Choice

There is one thing that I can always trust in, that I should be dead. At least, that is what I have always been told. Surely, God would not want one as evil and dark such as I in the world of hope and faith? Surely it was a mistake. Born soulless, or a plan that was never meant to be actually out into society.

But then again, I have also been told that he makes no mistakes, that everything happens for a reason and that I should just accept that as a reality. The thing is... I don't really seem to be able to care either way.

Sure, I believe in Heaven and Hell, and I also believe that there is God, his son, and Satan out there for us all to be influenced and our lives to be changed by. But, I have to agree with those who state the fact that I indeed have no soul and never will. I mean, what type of righteous natural woman can control and travel by shadows and darkness by just willing it? None. Nada. Zip.

And I kinda like it that way, no one to bother me, no one to pester me, just people who try to stay away just because they sense "evil" in me. And they would be right on that, of course. I would not lie and deny that fact. I am the dark one. And I am the plague in this world.

The city of Manhattan was humming with life and the nonstop motion of those travelling to and from there jobs and home.

Sitting on the balcony of my apartment, I observed it all with great relish.

A shadow crept along the sides of the building and across the banister, its darkness seeping into the atmosphere around it. The shapeless form of a blob then slithered up my arm in the same fashion a snake would and started to take shape on my shoulder.

I smiled when I saw a raven take its place, perching upon my shoulder in a regal and graceful fashion. "Hello Corvus," I greeted. He crowed in reply. "It is a beautiful day, and it will be an even more beautiful night." My legs swung in the empty space of the drop below me.

My smile grew to a grin as I watched the passerby look at me in shock as they walk past. When they saw me watching them, the hurriedly looked away and rushed past.

"What do you think?" I asked.

"Indeed," he rasped back.

Unknown to most, ravens are extremely intelligent birds, able to learn words and know their meaning. But Curvus was a tad bit smarter than a lot of his kind. He had the same speech capabilities as many of them do, but other than that, he was just like a human in the mind.

I sighed. "Time to get to school I guess."

I swung my legs back over the bars and as soon as I entered the apartment, my body sank down into a cluster of shadows along with Corvus close by.

I feel like today is going to be a good day.

The hallways of Lenton Academy was bustling with students trying to not be late for class. I didn't really bother to try though, no teacher was going to give me a tardy, they were too scared.

"Hey you!" A voice shouted. I chose to ignore it.

"Freak, I was calling for you!" I stopped, rolling my eyes. The rush of the students was replaced by sudden stillness and hushed whispers.

I turned around lazily to find myself only a foot away from the perpetrator. I grinned. Fresh meat.

"Why hello! I don't believe we've met before!" I cheerfully greeted. "My name is Shade Donrite."

He just stood there, scowling at me. My grin faltered. "This is the part where you tell me yours," I gritted out. The whispers grow louder. Corbis, still a shadow in the form of what would be mine since I didn't have one, started to waver in shape. He didn't like his master to me disrespected.

He stayed silent. My smile disappeared. "Excuse me, but do we have a problem?" I asked.

He looked behind himself to look towards what I presumed to be his "friends". They nodded and grinned in encouragement. Oh great, what do these rejects have planned n-

My thoughts were interrupted by the feel of his lips on mine. I growled and shoved him away from me. Corvus came up to sit upon my shoulder as my eyes changed from their semi-formal gold iris to be solid black.

The boy watched in fear as my anger grew. Though my surroundings grew darker and everyone could feel my aura grow darker, I kept a smile on my face, as if nothing was wrong. "Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. You should not have done that," I informed him, my voice more clear and dangerous than before. The students began to scream and run away. They knew at this point to get out of at least the general vicinity of where I was at.

I bent down to pick him up by the collar. "You are coming with me." The three of us disappeared into the shadows as we travel to my apartment.
