Sarah rolls over in her bed and checks the time on her phone. 2:45 am. She sighs and rolls onto her back, putting her hands behind her head and looking out the skylight in her roof. She starts to drift back to sleep, when she's startled by a faint booming sound, sort of like fireworks. As she rolls out of her bed, she calls out to her dad. There is no answer, so she heads for the door and to her dads room. She finds that he isn't there, and she hears the tv on downstairs. Calling out to him again, she heads down the stairs to find the tv on and an empty couch.

Joel had left the tv on a news station, and Sarah stopped and watched it for a bit. "Patients have started attacking civilians, all of them showing symptoms of this newfound disease. Residents are asked to stay in their homes. New studies and observations have found that the disease is spread through a bite. The symptoms can start within minutes. If you are to encounter someone with these symptoms, it is asked that you avoid making noise and slowly move away from them. They are known to charge towards loud sou--"

Sarah switches off the tv and walks over to the kitchen table, where her dads phone is lit up and buzzing. She picks it up and looks at the screen, noticing 3 missed calls and a text saying "I'm on my way" from her uncle Tommy. Wondering why uncle Tommy would be coming to their house, Sarah notices that her dads coat and gun are missing. She starts to walk towards the front door, when her father runs in through the glass door and closes it. He has a panicked look on his face, and when he sees Sarah his face gets even more panicked. He yells to her "Sarah get back!"

Backing away from the doors, Sarah asks "What's going on?"

"It's the Coopers, somethings wrong with their father." Joel says as he pays attention to the door and starts backing towards Sarah.

"What do you mean?"

Suddenly, someone breaks through the glass door and lands on the ground, slowly getting up. Frozen with terror, Sarah stares at what used to be her neighbor. It's skin is deathly pale, it's eyes are white, and it's hair is falling out. It gets up and screams at Joel and Sarah, and starts moving towards them.

Joel raises his gun and yells "Jimmy! I don't wanna have to do this, but if you come any closer I'll shoot!"

As if in response, "Jimmy" screamed even louder and ran towards Sarah and Joel. Almost immediately, Joel pulled the trigger and the body fell. Sarah looked at her dad and struggled to speak.

"What the hell was that?"

"That, was the disease that's been all over the news lately. I don't know how it works, but it turns people into that." Joel gestures to the body on their floor as headlights shine through the windows. "That's Tommy. Let's go."

Sarah gets her shoes and heads to the door. "Why's uncle Tommy here?"

"He says the military's moving to keep people in the city, so the disease doesn't spread. Hopefully, we'll be out before that happens." Joel walks out the door and waves to Tommy, who gets out of the truck and walks to Joel.

"Are you ok? What the hell happened? You're covered in blood." Tommy grabs Joel's shoulders and looks him over.

"I'm fine. It's not my blood. The disease is spreading quickly, and one of them got into our house." Joel opens up the passenger door to the truck and gets in.

Sarah crawls into the middle seat in the back and and rests her head on the seat. Tommy pulls out of the driveway and onto the street, heading through the city. Sarah looks out the window, watching the lights of the city fly by. She notices that most of the windows are broken, and sees a few bodies on the sidewalks. Sarah moves back to the center and leans back, trying to get some sleep. Whenever she closes her eyes, all she can see is the image of her dead neighbor on their carpet, so she decides to take out a comic and read for the rest of the drive.
